The Deccan Charges were one of the eight initial teams of the Indian Premier League and the winners of the second edition of the tournament in 2009. After five seasons in the competition, the franchise was terminated due to a breach of contract terms.

However, during their five years in the IPL, the Hyderabad franchise saw some splendid cricket and players on display from around the world. The second season of the IPL was conducted and hosted by South Africa, although the format of the competition remained unchanged.

Here we pay homage to some stars of the former franchise by looking at the all-time XI players in the history of the Deccan Chargers.


Openers-

Shikhar Dhawan

Current SRH opener, Shikhar Dhawan was formerly a Deccan Chargers player for their last two seasons. Although during his time at the franchise, they performed dismally. Dhawan has proven himself to be consistent in the IPL amassing 4300 runs and makes his way into the best Deccan Chargers 11 ahead of Herschelle Gibbs.

Adam Gilchrist

Former Australian captain, Adam Gilchrist, led the Deccan Chargers to IPL glory in the second edition of the tournament in South Africa. The wicket-keeper batsmen led the side to their only title after a dismal first IPL season where the side finished last under VVS Laxman. An explosive batsman, Gilchrist scored more than 2000 runs in 80 IPL appearances.

Rohit Sharma

Indian opener and Mumbai Indians captain, Rohit Sharma, is one of the most consistent and dominant players in the IPL. Deccan Chargers had the player for two seasons and he won the tournament for the first time with the franchise.

He went on to win the IPL as the captain of the Mumbai Indians on three separate occasions, in 2013, 2015, and 2017.

Kumar Sangakkara

Former Sri Lankan captain, Kumar Sangakkara, was also the captain of the Deccan Chargers for their last two seasons with Cameron White acting as a stand-in captain on occasions.

Sanga amassed 1382 runs in 56 IPL matches. A fantastic and consistent batsman, the Sri Lankan was a highly technical player with loads of ability, experience, and game knowledge.

T Suman

A former middle-order batsman, T Suman, because of his experience and technique, gets into the franchise all-time XI. The player was part of the team that lifted the IPL in 2009. Suman made 43 IPL appearances for four franchises but still managed to win the trophy on two occasions.

He also experienced a triumphant campaign with the new Hyderabad franchise - Sunrisers Hyderabad, in 2016.

Venugopal Rao

Like Laxman, Venugopal Rao only played for three years with the Deccan Chargers. During his time with the Hyderabad franchise, he won the title in 2009.

He then moved to Delhi Daredevils for another three seasons before being picked up by the new Hyderabad franchise, SRH, for the 2014 season.

Andrew Symonds

Former Australia World Cup winner, Andrew Symonds, was an excellent all around for Deccan Chargers as he guided the franchise to an IPL title in 2009.

Symonds played four seasons in the IPL, three with the Chargers and one for the Mumbai Indians in 2011. In 39 IPL appearances, the Aussie scored 974 runs and picked up 20 wickets.

Amit Mishra

India's leading wicket in IPL history, Amit Mishra, has picked up 140 wickets during his IPL career. Mishra is also second on the all-time list of wicket-takers only behind Lasith Malinga. He could overtake the Sri Lankan soon and reign supreme as the tournament's all-time leading wicket-taker. Unfortunately, Mishra didn't win anything during his time with the franchise but still has to be in the XI due to his accolades.

Pragyan Ojha

Three-time IPL winner, Pragyan Ojha, is the second spinner in the team. He won the tournament with the Decan Chargers in 2009 and with the Mumbai Indian in 2013 and 2015. In 92 IPL appearances, he picked 89 wickets for two franchises. A quality left arm off spinner, Ojha was a hard bowler to face.

RP Singh

32-year-old Indian pacer, RP Singh, played for numerous IPL franchises namely Deccan Chargers, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Gujarat Lions, and Rising Pune Supergiant.

He is a veteran of the tournament and has played 82 matches, picking up 90 wickets. The Indian pacer was part of the team that won the inaugural T20 World Cup in South Africa in 2007 as well. He also won the IPL with the Deccan Chargers in 2009.

Dale Steyn

South African speedster Dale Steyn has an impressive record of picking up 92 wickets in 90 IPL appearances for the RCB, Deccan Chargers, SRH, and Gujarat Lions.

Despite not winning the IPL, Steyn's record in the IPL speaks for itself. The bowler has struggled with injury lately but easily makes it into the all-time XI of the franchise.
