IPL: Foreign players who represented most IPL franchises

Enter ca

Foreign players are an integral part of any Indian Premier League side. Due to the upper cap on the number of foreign players one can play in a side, these overseas professionals are expected to be match-winners and perform well in every game they play.

If a season does not go their way, the franchises don't hesitate to sack them and bring new players in their place.

Here is a list of foreign players who have played for the most number of IPL franchises.

Note: Only those players who have played for 5 or more teams have been considered. Pune Warriors India and Rising Pune Supergiant have been considered two different teams. Sunrisers Hyderabad and Deccan Chargers have also been looked at as two different teams for the purposes.

Aaron Finch (RR, DD, PWI, SRH, MI, GL, KXIP)

The only player to be a part of 7 IPL franchises in the history of IPL, Aaron Finch started his career with the Rajasthan Royals and played for them till 2010. In 2011, he was picked by the Delhi Daredevils, and since then, he has been changing sides almost every season.

He led Pune Warriors India in their disastrous 2013 season, following which he was picked up by the Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2014. After an unimpressive season, the SRH let him go, after which he joined the Mumbai Indians next year.

He played only 3 games for MI in 2015 and was ruled out of the entire season due to an injury. In 2016, he was picked up by the Gujarat Lions and after the their exit from the IPL, he will now be with the Kings XI Punjab for the upcoming 2018 season.

The Sri Lankan all-rounder is a devastating T20 player when he gets going. He has a rare distinction of playing for 5 different franchises in 5 consecutive years (2010-2014).

Perera was a part of the Chennai Super Kings in 2010 and the Kochi Tuskers Kerala in 2011. He joined the Mumbai Indians in 2012 and was sacked after one season. In 2013, he found himself with the Sunrisers Hyderabad in their maiden season, but the franchise decided not to continue with him.

He then joined the Kings XI Punjab for a couple of seasons (2014 and 2015) following which he was picked up by the Rising Pune Supergiant. Due to his lackluster performances, he did not find any bidders in 2017 or this year as well.

Steve Smith (RCB, KTK, PWI, RR, RPS)

The Australian captain too, like his teammate Finch, has had a taste of playing for various IPL franchises. Starting his career with the Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2010, he made a move to the Kochi Tuskers Kerala the very next year.

After Kochi's exit from the IPL after just one season, he found himself with the Pune Warriors India in 2012. The Pune franchise too, did not last long and departed from the league in 2013, following which Smith was picked up by the Rajasthan Royals in 2014. After the Royals were banned for 2016 and 2017 season, he was snapped up by the Rising Pune Supergiant, another Pune-based franchise.

In 2018, he finds himself back with the Rajasthan Royals again.

Kevin Pietersen (RCB, DC, DD, SRH, RPS)

The star English batsman and the favorite kid of controversy started his IPL stint with the Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2009. After a couple of seasons, he was picked up by the Deccan Chargers in 2011 but did not play a single game for them due to an injury.

The Deccan Chargers let him go and KP found a new home in Delhi in 2012. He played for them for 3 years but after a disastrous 2014 campaign, he was not retained by the men in red and blue.

He joined another Hyderabad-based franchise, the Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2015 but did not turn up to play for them as he felt playing an entire English County season will enhance the chances of his national comeback. The comeback did not happen and KP was released by SRH prior to the 2016 season. He joined the RPS in 2016 but was ruled out after just 4 games and that was it for his IPL career.
