The BCCI had made a crucial call following the stampede in Bengaluru during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) IPL 2025 victory celebrations. RCB won their maiden IPL title by beating Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the final of the 2025 edition.
The final was played on Tuesday, June 3, in Ahmedabad. Just a day after the final, victory celebrations took place in Bengaluru on June 4, Wednesday. However, it proved to be a hasty decision to hold the celebrations, turning it into a tragedy as 11 deaths occurred with several left injured as a result of a stampede due to a massive crowd.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated that the board does not have any control in the celebrations by franchises. However, they will look to issue an advisory on the same going forward to avoid such incidents again in the future.
“Whatever happened is very unfortunate. But we don’t want to play the guilty game now. BCCI looks after the event up to the award presentation ceremony after such tournaments, but from now on we will try to put at least some advisory so that such incidents do not happen," he was quoted as saying by News18.
RCB had beaten Punjab Kings (PBKS) by six wickets in the final to lift their maiden IPL trophy. They broke the 17-year-old jinx as they had not won the trophy despite coming close on multiple occassions in the past.
BCCI secretary cites example of 2024 T20 World Cup victory parade in Mumbai last year
When India won the 2024 T20 World Cup in 2024, a victory parade was held in Mumbai following the triumph. India had finally managed to break the ICC trophy draught after winning a title for the first time since 2013.
“When BCCI handles it, we take time and handle everything. For the T20 World Cup victory parade in Mumbai, we took some time and did it. In Bengaluru, it was done within hours, and I think that was the factor," Devajit Saikia said, drawing parallel following the stampede in Bengaluru.
A large open bus parade had taken place in Mumbai for the same last year. The victory celebration was conducted smoothly by the Indian board without any casualties with a systematic approach and with enough gap after the tournament was completed.
