IPL auctions have always been a tricky affair for the franchises. The calculation regarding the amount of money to be spent on a particular player and whether that player actually fits into the scheme of things for the franchise are things that every team at the auction needs to be clear about.

While sometimes teams buy players at a high price at the auction but they end up playing very less number of games due to their team combinations, at other times players fail to deliver at crucial moments leaving their teams wondering if those players were really worth the money put on them?

There were some debatable decisions taken by the teams at the auction this year too. And only time will tell how expensive these decisions might prove for them.

Here is a list containing one player each team could regret buying at the auction.

#8 Akshdeep Nath - Royal Challengers Bangalore

After going unsold in the first round, little did Akshdeep Nath expect to fetch the huge sum of 3.6 crore. After a bidding tussle between Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore, the Uttar Pradesh wicket-keeper batsman was bought by RCB.

The primary reason for RCB bidding aggressively was the dearth of wicket-keepers in their squad.

But RCB might have spent too much in the process.

Even though Akshdeep has been a consistent performer in domestic cricket, his T20 numbers are not spectacular. A mediocre average of 23.45 and a strike-rate of 122.66 in T20s is decent but certainly not outrageous enough to get the amount that he got. The 25-year-old has played IPL before for Gujarat Lions and Kings XI Punjab but failed to impress after scoring just 29 runs in 6 games.

Did RCB overspend on Akshdeep Nath? Only time will tell.

#7 Oshane Thomas - Rajasthan Royals

Thomas has been erratic with his line and length
Thomas has been erratic with his line and length

Fast bowlers who can bowl at an express pace always excite cricket fans. It is pure joy to see these fast bowlers bamboozle the batsmen. One such talent from West Indies is Oshane Thomas.

Thomas came into limelight after his breakthrough performance in the CPL 2018. The 21-year-old impressed everyone with his raw pace and was fast-tracked in the national side immediately.

He gave a good account of himself in the T20 series against India where he troubled the likes of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan. Owing to which he was bought by Rajasthan Royals at a price of 1.1 crore.

However, Rajasthan Royals should be wary of the fact that Oshane Thomas can be erratic at times. In fact, in his young international career, he has struggled to find his rhythm and batsmen have used his pace to their advantage. Thomas has an economy of 9.7 in 6 T20 Internationals. It will be a big challenge for the Jamaican to bowl against the best batsmen in the world in the IPL.

#6 Wriddhiman Saha - Sunrisers Hyderabad

Saha couldn't do much with the bat for SRH in IPL 2018
Saha couldn't do much with the bat for SRH in IPL 2018

Sunrisers Hyderabad have been one of the smartest teams when it comes to the auction. The core management group of the franchise always seems to have their priorities set. This time around they were in need of a wicket-keeper.

Sunrisers had released Wriddhiman Saha before the auction and were looking to rope in a replacement for him. While they did buy England's Johnny Bairstow, they also got back Wriddhiman Saha, at a price that was much lower than what they paid for him last auction.

There is hardly any doubt about Saha's pedigree as a wicket-keeper but his place in the side as a batsman is questionable. Saha batted at different positions for the Sunrisers last season but couldn't do much with the bat. He scored a paltry 122 runs in 11 matches at an average of 15.25. Moreover, the Indian Test wicket-keeper has been out of cricket for some time due to an injury. With the clouds of form and fitness concerns around Saha, Sunrisers might have got it wrong this time around.

#5 Colin Ingram - Delhi Daredevils

Can Ingram blossom on slow Indian pitches?
Can Ingram blossom on slow Indian pitches?

Indian fans might not have heard his name before, but Colin Ingram is a familiar face in different T20 leagues around the world. The South African cricketer was considered to be one of the most talented batsmen in the country when he made his international debut in 2010. But unfortunately, after a mediocre performance in the 31 ODIs for the Proteas, Ingram signed a Kolpak deal with Glamorgan in 2014.

Since then Ingram has played for several teams in different T20 leagues all around the world. To the surprise of many, Ingram has played in the IPL before and that too for Delhi Daredevils.

The reason for Ingram getting big bucks at the auction was his stupendous current form. The 33-year-old was part of the victorious Trinbago Knight Riders side that won the CPL. He also performed brilliantly for Glamorgan in the Vitality Blast where he scored 402 runs in 8 games.

However, Ingram does not have much experience of playing in subcontinent conditions and might struggle on slow Indian pitches. Also, Delhi Capitals already have Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer and it will be difficult for Ingram to find a spot in that packed middle-order.

#4 Mohit Sharma - Chennai Super Kings

Mohit Sharma wasn't retained by KXIP

Chennai Super Kings, who were normally sedate at the auction, sprung into action as soon as Mohit Sharma's name came up for auction. And they did have a reason to do so. Mohit Sharma was one of the most consistent performers for Chennai Super Kings before the team was banned in 2015. Riding on his good IPL form he even made it to the national side.

Mohit Sharma has been part of the Kings XI Punjab squad in the last three years. The Haryana seamer had a decent couple of seasons for the franchise but failed in 2018. He took just 7 wickets in 9 matches and gave away runs at an economy of 10.85 and was thus released by Kings XI.

Sharma's recent domestic performance doesn't inspire any confidence either. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where his state side reached the quarter-final, the pacer took just 2 wickets in 8 matches. He has also had some troubles with injuries in the recent past and might struggle to play for CSK.

#3 Sam Curran - Kings XI Punjab

How effective is Sam Curran in T20 cricket?
How effective is Sam Curran in T20 cricket?

Sam Curran became the most expensive overseas player at the auction when he was bought by Kings XI Punjab for a whopping 7.2 crore. Sam Curran reaped rewards for his man-of-the-series performance against Team India in the Test series. With the ball, Curran troubled the Indian batsmen with his swing and with the bat, he scored some crucial runs batting in the lower-order. He extended his purple patch in the series against Sri Lanka too.

Being an all-rounder, and a talented one too, Curran was always going to be in demand at the auction. But the question is, is he really worth it?

The 20-year-old does not boost a great T20 record. He has an average of 15.93 and strike-rate of 118.90 in T20s. Curran hasn't been impressive with the ball either taking just 42 wickets in 47 matches at an economy of 8.24 runs per over.

Have the Kings XI erred in taking Curran's Test credentials as a yardstick for T20 cricket?

#2 Carlos Brathwaite - Kolkata Knight Riders

Brathwaite has been disappointing with the bat in the IPL
Brathwaite has been disappointing with the bat in the IPL

Kolkata Knight Riders bought Carlos Brathwaite for an eye-popping amount of 5 crore at the auction. KKR will be the third IPL team Brathwaite will represent in his fourth year of IPL. And the reason for this is his underwhelming performance in the IPL so far. After his last over heroics in the final of the World T20 against England, Brathwaite was seen as the next big thing in T20 cricket. But unfortunately, despite showing flashes of brilliance, he has failed to live up to expectations.

In 14 IPL games, the 30-year-old has scored just 170 runs at a below-par average of 15.45. With the ball, he has 13 scalps to his name while conceding runs at a poor economy of 8.9 runs per over.

The Windies T20 skipper hasn't set the stage on fire in international cricket either.

Also, KKR already have all-rounders like Andre Russell and Sunil Narine in their squad and spending so much on Brathwaite might not bring desired results for the franchise.

#1 Yuvraj Singh - Mumbai Indians

This might be the last we see of Yuvraj in the IPL
This might be the last we see of Yuvraj in the IPL

Mumbai Indians won a lot of hearts when they bought one of India's greatest limited-overs cricketers Yuvraj Singh at the auction.

Yuvraj went unsold a couple of times but was finally snapped by Mumbai Indians for 1 crore.

While Yuvraj is one of the most popular cricketers in the country and is a cult figure, will he win matches for them when it matters the most?

It is a known fact that Yuvraj Singh has not been able to do justice to his talent in the IPL. This is a major reason why the southpaw has played for as many as 7 IPL teams, with the Mumbai Indians being the 7th.

An average of 24.78 tells the story of his unfulfilled IPL career. The decision to buy Yuvraj looks like more of an effort to increase the franchise's fan base because, on the basis of current form, Yuvraj does not fit in the side as a batsman.

Yuvraj is 37 at the moment and IPL 2019 might be the swansong of his illustrious cricket career.
