Piyush Chawla IPL Teams from 2008-24

Piyush Chawla started his IPL journey under Yuvraj Singh's captaincy at Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in 2008. He snared 17 wickets in the first season at an average of 22.88 to finish as the fourth-highest wicket-taker of the season behind S Sreesanth (19), Shane Warne (19) and Sohail Tanvir (21).

He picked 12 wickets apiece in the next two seasons. Although the Punjab franchise released all of its players ahead of the 2011 mega auction, Chawla's services were regained by KXIP for INR 4.14 crore in the auction.

Chawla was one of the key bowlers under Adam Gilchrist for Punjab and finished as the team's leading wicket-taker in the 2011 and 2012 seasons, picking 16 wickets each season. The leg-spinner moved to Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2014.

With 84 wickets in 87 matches in six seasons (2008-2013), Chawla still leads the charts of most wickets taken by a Punjab bowler in IPL even though he hasn't played for the franchise for close to a decade now.

The spinner accounted for 14 wickets in his first season for KKR at an average of 21.64 and an economy rate of 7.67. But the Gujarat cricketer is remembered for his finishing touches in the final against Punjab.

When KKR required 11 runs off 7 balls, Chawla pulled Mitchell Johnson for a six to bring down the equation to 5 in the last over. He later smashed a boundary against Parvinder Awana over point for four to seal KKR's victory and guide them to their second IPL title.

Chawla combined with the wily spinner Sunil Narine and prodigious Kuldeep Yadav to form a colossal spin attack. During the 2018 IPL auction, KKR used their Right-to-match card to hold back the leg-spinner. After playing six seasons for KKR from 2014 to 2019, Chawla moved to CSK to reunite with his World Cup-winning skipper MS Dhoni.

Notwithstanding his charm for KKR and Punjab, Chawla got just seven matches under Dhoni. He picked six wickets at an average of 31.38 and his economy was close to 10 that season. He was released from the CSK squad ahead of the mini-auction in 2021 and was later roped in by Mumbai Indians in the auction for INR 2.40 crore.

Chawla played the final league game against Sunrisers Hyderabad where he picked one wicket for 38 runs. He was released from the MI squad in November 2021 and went unsold in the mega auction held in February 2022. MI got back Chawla in the IPL 2023 mini-auction for INR 50 lakh and the team’s decision paid off as Chawla returned with 22 wickets in that season.

Piyush Chawla is all set to play in IPL 2024 for the Men in Blue and Gold for a salary of INR 50 lakhs.
