Top 5 teams with best win/loss ratio in IPL

The 11th edition of the IPL is all set to kick off on April 7, 2018, at the Wankhede Stadium, where the Mumbai Indians meet the Chennai Super Kings. So far only Rajasthan Royals, Deccan Chargers, Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians have lifted the IPL trophy.

Though some great teams have never won the IPL, they have had more wins than other teams which have won the IPL. This is due to the consistency that they have shown in the past decade of this decorated competition.

On that note, take a look at the 5 teams with the best win/loss ratio in IPL history:

#5 Kolkata Knight Riders (1.11)

One of only 3 teams to have won the IPL more than once, Kolkata Knight Riders saw their fortunes change after appointing Gautam Gambhir as captain. Adhering to their motto ‘Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo Re', the club are a testament to the passion of their local cricket-frenzy fans. They didn't make the semis until 2010, but a change in their core helped them in becoming one of the best IPL teams of this decade thereafter.

They qualified for the playoffs 5 times after that and lifted the trophy in 2012 and 2014. They also reached the finals of the 2014 Champions League but failed to beat CSK and ended runners-up. With a win percentage of 52.70, Kolkata have established themselves as one of the best teams in the IPL.

They would love to win the IPL for the third time this year under the able leadership of Dinesh Karthik.

#4 Rajasthan Royals (1.15)

Having started the inaugural season as the underdogs, they defeated the mighty Chennai Super Kings under the awe-inspiring captaincy of one of the greats of the game - Shane Warne. Apart from winning the inaugural edition of the IPL, Royals also reached the final of the Champions League T20 in 2013, losing out to Mumbai Indians in the end.

In the seasons gone by, they have been led by some of the greats of the game in the form of Shane Watson, Steve Smith and Rahul Dravid.

Though Rajasthan Royals have been inconsistent in the past few seasons, they still boast of a win% of more than 53%. With captain Steve Smith banned from playing the IPL this year, the onus would be on Ajinkya Rahane to help the side win their 2nd IPL title.

#3 Sunrisers Hyderabad (1.21)

Led by the charismatic David Warner for the past three years, SRH won the IPL in 2016, defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore in an epic final. Their bowling line-up has been one of the best in recent years, boasting players like Rashid Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mustafizur Rehman among many others.

The term ‘Orange Army’ was coined before the 2017 season to engage fans and was promoted across all social media platforms. With over 5 million likes on Facebook, the team are always creating buzz on social media.

With Warner banned from the IPL this year, SRH have appointed Kane Williamson as their new captain.

#2 Mumbai Indians (1.4)

Mumbai's history can be majorly divided into two eras - pre-2012 and post 2012, with captain Rohit Sharma the most influential player in a post-2012 team. Sharma is ranked third in terms of most runs, most sixes and most catches as a fielder in the ten seasons of IPL. His 4207 runs are only behind Raina’s 4540 and Kohli’s 4418.

In the bowling department, Lasith Malinga and Harbhajan Singh hold the number one and three spots respectively in the list of top wicket-takers in IPL history. Veteran players like Sanath Jayasuriya, Shaun Pollock, Sachin Tendulkar have all played for Mumbai Indians as well.

MI have won the IPL in 2013, 2015 and 2017 and also the Champions League T20 in 2011 and 2013.

#1 Chennai Super Kings (1.54)

The team with the best win/loss ratio in IPL is Chennai Super Kings. The 'men in yellow' are the only team to have reached the playoffs in every season. They are also the only team to win the IPL in 2 consecutive seasons (2010, 2011). They have also won the Champions League twice (2010, 2014).

They are led by current Indian wicket keeper-batman MS Dhoni. Suresh Raina is the league's highest run scorer with more than 4500 runs to his name. They have reached the final of the IPL an unmatched 6 times.

CSK would love to win the IPL for the 3rd time and they take on Mumbai Indians in the opening match of this year's IPL.
