Rohit Sharma may have won a Indian Premier league (IPL) and a Champions league T20 tournament for the Mumbai-based IPL franchise Mumbai Indians, but the stylish right-hand batsman used to be a nightmare for them. In the second edition of IPL which was held in South Africa, Rohit took a hat-trick against Mumbai Indians at Centurion. He also scored 38 crucial runs to help his side Deccan Chargers beat Mumbai Indians by 19 runs on May 6,2009.

It was the 32nd match of the IPL 2009 played at the SuperSport Park in Centurion, then Deccan Captain Adam Gilchrist won the toss and elected to bat first. Deccan posted a respectable total of 145 for six in their allotted 20 overs. Rohit was the highest scorer for Deccan with 38 valuable runs.

Chasing the total Mumbai Indians were cruising towards the total with ease. In the 16th over of the innings Gilchrist invited Rohit Sharma to bowl. The right-hand off-break bowler first cleaned up left-hand batsman Abhishek Nayar on the fifth ball of that over. After Nayar’s dismissal came Harbhajan Singh, he went to sweep the final ball of the over from outside the off-stump. A big inside edge guided the ball right into the wickets. Rohit had two wickets in two deliveries.

Rohit again came to bowl the 18th over This time he was on a hat-trick. He bowled a very straight ball to JP Duminy. The South African was caught behind by the Gilchrist. Rohit got his first ever hat-trick. The whole stadium was jubilant so were Rohit and his teammates.

Rohit ended his majestic spell with the figures of 4 wickets allowing 6 runs off two overs and helped his team beat the Mumbai Indian by 19 runs.
