Injured police horse Shaktiman died in Uttarakhand on 20 April after it was beaten up during a political rally in Dehradun.

Shaktiman was on duty from the Uttarakhand mounted police when the state opposition staged a rally to protest against corruption by the state government on 14 March.

Under the leadership of MLA Ganesh Joshi, party men beat the horse and broke its leg. Doctors had to amputate the limb, and replace it with a prosthetic prop but Shaktiman never recovered.

Although Ganesh Joshi expressed regret, his party blamed the government for the animal’s death as it was not given adequate care.

Shaktiman’s caretaker, Shyam Singh Chauhan said, “He did not give up eating, he showed his will to fight back and survive.”

Indian Test team captain Virat Kohli, who is known for his fondness towards animals, recently posted a picture of him on social media with a horse during India’s tour of Australia earlier this year. The 27-year-old cricketer is currently leading the Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL, took to Twitter to pay his respect to Shaktiman.

After the news of Shaktiman’s death broke on social media, people from across the country also tweeted to pay their respects.
