At just 23 years of age, he has become the talk of the town, owing to his timely strikes in the ongoing IPL. He represents Royal Challengers Bangalore as a leg break googly bowler in IPL, and is known to be quite an economical bowler. A large number of fans are expecting him to perform well in today’s important encounter for RCB against Rajasthan Royals. This hardworking and committed bowler has got tremendous level of self esteem and confidence, which is noticed very often from his body language. Yes, I am referring to the new emerging talent named Yuzvendra Singh Chahal of Haryana.

Before we move forward, let me share a very interesting fact about Yuzvendra. Prior to his exposure to cricket, he had represented India in chess in the Asian Youth Championship (Under 12 category) in Kozhikode. Later, he also played in the World Youth Championships.

In fact, he started playing chess at the age of just 7 – learning the tricks on a computer. He got the full support from his family, especially his father KK Chahal, who is an advocate in Jind, Haryana. Somehow, he could not find a sponsor so he changed his focus from chess to cricket. And what a decision it has proved to be!

He came to the limelight when he was able to grab 34 wickets in the National Under 19 Cooch Behar Trophy in the year 2009. He was signed by Mumbai Indians in the year 2011, though he could play only in one match in the IPL. He also played 6 matches in the Champions Trophy for Mumbai Indians, but could not ahieve much. This year he has been bought by RCB.

He has played a total of 30 T20 matches wherein he has taken 23 wickets with a fairly good economy of 5.53. In the 17 List A matches he has played, he has maintained a very good economy of 3.77. Yuzvendra made his Ranji debut while playing for Haryana in the year 2009 where he took 25 wickets in 14 matches.

Haryana Ranji Trophy coach Ashwani Kumar once said that the short form of the game suits Yuzvendra more. He had said, “He has a bowling action with lower trajectory. He bowls faster and keeps around the middle stump-off stump line, forcing the batsmen to play across. Unlike Amit Mishra, who turns the ball big, or Anil Kumble, who has height and gets bounce, Chahal is different. It becomes difficult to cut or pull against him.”

We really hope that Yuzvendra goes on to achieve greater things for his club as well as his country. It appears that this IPL has given us two potential international bowlers like Ishwar Pandey and Yuzvendra.
