More than a decade ago, Manchester City were merely a mid-table club. They had a pretty successful past of course, something that many modern fans don't know much about, but in the last seven or eight years, the club have become a force to reckon with.
Under Thakshin Shinawatra, the club pretty much established themselves as a Premier League side but the club really started taking big strides after being taken over by Abu Dhabi United Group Investment and Development Limited in 2008.
Under the Abu Dhabi group, City, despite the lack of silverware, were very bold from the onset and spent big money on proven players in Europe. The spending spree started with players like Robinho and Nigel De Jong but the club didn't make good progress under Sven-Goran Erikssen. Roberto Mancini was brought in after dominating the Serie A with Inter Milan and he turned the club's fortunes around as City first won the FA Cup and then stole the league away from Manchester United.
City's spending power is more than anyone else in the Premier League and that isn't surprising. It all started with the likes of Sergio Aguero, Mario Balotelli, Edin Dzeko and David Silva and we've seen the big spending continue with Pep Guardiola. In fact, the club's back four of Benjamin Mendy, John Stones, Aymeric Laporte and Kyle Walker cost them more than £100m which is pretty staggering.
City's most expensive player is Kevin De Bruyne who was signed under Manuel Pellegrini a few years ago. It's astounding that City's top 10 signings, have all been above the £35m mark. Unlike their buys, City haven't been clever in selling players. You could, however, argue that they don't need to considering the resources they have.
