Cameron Smith

Australian golfer Cameron Smith was born in Brisbane, Queensland, on August 18, 1993, to parents Des and Sharon Smith. Since his father was a scratch player—a golfer with a zero handicap—and frequented Brisbane's Wantima Golf Club, he encouraged Cameron to develop a love for the game. In 2004, Cameron Smith was taken under the wing of Grant Field, one of Australia's most successful golf coaches.

According to Golf Digest, Des realized his son “could make a career out of golf when Cameron, at 12, broke par and beat his dad for the first time in the same round (69 to his dad’s 71).” Smith won his first major event at the Open Championship, held at St. Andrews' Old Course, in July 2022. He finished one shot ahead of Cameron Young and two ahead of joint third-round leader Rory McIlroy after shooting a final-round 64 to recover from four strokes behind the lead.

He had a hip injury that kept him out of the second event, the BMW Championship, during the FedEx Cup Playoffs in August. He took up the PGA Player of the Year trophy after the 2022 PGA Tour campaign.
