English golfer Matt Fitzpatrick, the 2022 U.S. Open champion, was born on September 1, 1994. Fitzpatrick, then 18, won his first amateur tournament at the 2012 Boys Amateur Championship; the next season, he won the U.S. Amateur in 2013.

Fitzpatrick won the 2013 Mark H. McCormack Medal and held the top spot in the World Amateur Golf Rankings that season; he turned professional by 2014 and went on to win ten professional titles as of June 2024.

Billy Foster made light of the fact that he had at last gotten a "gorilla" off his back after assisting Matt Fitzpatrick in winning the 2022 US Open. The Yorkshireman had previously witnessed several of the players he had caddied for, but he had never won a major.
