PS5 players are the only next-gen gamers that can get GTA Online for free. By comparison, Xbox Series X|S players will have to pay $9.99 to get the same game. It's worth noting that this free offer only extends to the standalone version of GTA Online and does not include the single-player GTA 5 game.

This free offer won't last forever; it will expire on June 14, 2022. After that date, the game's price will go up to $19.99 until another future discount. The game was available to pre-order since March 8, 2022, so gamers have a little over three months to decide if they want to get this game on the PS5 or not.

Any PS5 gamer curious to know more about this game's current deal can find out more from the "Game and legal info" section in the PlayStation Store. The first sentence of this section states:

"Special introductory price valid from 15-03-2021 to 14-06-2022 (Standard Price: $19.99)"

The dates are written in the day-month-year format, with the "special introductory price" being $0. Although GTA 5 isn't free, it also has a discount that expires on June 14, 2022; it costs $9.99 on the PS5 but will cost $39.99 after that date.

PS Plus is required to play GTA Online on the PS5. Players currently have the following prices per subscription:

  • $9.99 (Monthly)
  • $24.99 (Quarterly)
  • $59.99 (Yearly)

Other than graphical improvements and small technical optimization, there are a few changes that Rockstar has advertised for this next-gen port. The first new prominent feature is Career Builder, which is aimed at new GTA Online players trying to make it big in Los Santos.

It allows beginners to become entrepreneurs in the form of:

  • Executive
  • Gunrunner
  • Night Club Owner
  • Biker

They will get $4M in addition to the business property, which is valuable for any new player. Rockstar does note that players will only get to keep $1M of this bonus into GTA Online, so they should spend the money wisely. However, this feature isn't the only new one in the next-gen ports.

Hao's Special Works is another advertised feature that players should know about. It essentially brings new vehicle upgrades to select vehicles, along with new races, Time Trials, and a Premium Test Ride.

This new feature will apparently be at the Los Santos Car Meet, although it's worth stating that Rockstar Games hasn't specified which cars will be getting upgrades.

GTA Online players don't have to start over on the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. They can make use of the character transfer feature, which will allow them to transfer all of their progress over in a one-time migration. Doing so will also give them a "fully converted Karin S95" and "Hao's Special Work Racing Outfit" along with a new Chameleon paint job.
