Minecraft 1.20.5 is the last update for 1.20. It brings a plethora of interesting and amazing additions, including armadillos, wolf armor, and several new fur patterns for wolves. With 1.20.5 and 1.21 around the corner, now is the time to prepare for these upcoming updates, by building up new base features and exploring around.

Detailed below are some steps every player should consider following to adequately prepare for 1.20.5 and its amazing content.

Amazing things to do before Minecraft 1.20.5 drops

1) Find some savanna and badlands biomes

Much of 1.20.5's content is either related to or centered around the adorable upcoming Minecraft armadillo. And since armadillos can be found in savannas or gorgeous badlands biomes, locating the nearest of either is a good idea.

This will mean as soon as 1.20.5 drops, you can start farming armadillo spawns to set up a farm for their scutes. These scutes are useful for creating and maintaining Minecraft wolf armor, an equippable that has finally made the companions viable combat partners.

2) Prepare a pen for armadillos

With at least one savanna or badlands biome found, the next thing to do to prepare for 1.20.5 is to make a small pen for the future armadillos to live in. This pen doesn't need to be particularly large or fancy. Even a small, fenced-in area with torches will do.

Armadillos eat and breed with spider eyes. This makes finding a badlands one even better, as they often have mineshafts open to the surface, within which you can find cave spider spawners.

Since armadillo scutes are so useful for keeping dogs in the fight, it's wise to have a decent number of them within the farm so that a reasonable amount of scutes are consistently dropping.

3) Make a brush

Armadillos will drop scutes naturally over time. This behavior is almost identical to how chickens lay eggs. This means waiting will technically work, but it isn't a recommended strategy.

Thankfully, you can manually grab scutes from armadillos. This is done by brushing the mob with a brush item, giving it a use outside of Minecraft's interesting archeology system. Crafting a brush is quite simple, only requiring a feather, copper ingot, and stick, arranged in a vertical line within the crafting interface.

Having some brushes ready to go, and maybe even stored within the previously mentioned armadillo farm, will make getting dyeable Minecraft wolf armor way faster once 1.20.5 drops.

4) Tame some wolves

It might seem strange to go out and collect some wolves, especially since Minecraft's wolf is getting different varieties within 1.20.5, but that's exactly what makes this the right time. It's about to become much harder to get large numbers of original wolves.

This means any players who have a particularly strong preference for the game's original furry friend should adventure around and find some more now, before 1.20.5 officially drops.

5) Find the different wolf biomes

As mentioned previously, there are several new types of wolves being added alongside 1.20.5. The full list of wolves and their biomes is:

Wolf TypeBiome
Chestnut WolfOld-Growth Spruce Taiga
Wood WolfOak Forests
Rusty WolfJungles
Ashen WolfSnowy Taiga
Black WolfOld-Growth Pine Taiga
Snowy WolfMountain Grove
Striped WolfWooded Badlands
Spotted WolfSavanna Plateau
Pale WolfRegular Taiga

This means you must explore for quite a bit before tracking down all of these different biomes. Starting now and writing down the coordinates of nearby biomes will simplify the acquisition of these new Minecraft advancement for taming all types of wolves.

6) Make a mob farm

Since wolves are a major focus of this update, now's the time to get ready to tame a lot of them, especially due to the previously mentioned advancement for taming all nine types. Wild wolves require bones to tame. These can be farmed naturally, but it's much more time-effective in the long run to set up a generic Minecraft mob farm to get useful drops such as bones, string, and gunpowder.

Additionally, if you're lucky enough to find a skeleton spawner, you could instead set up a skeleton XP farm. This will make getting Minecraft's best enchantments through an enchanting table easier due to all the XP. It also means you'll have an unlimited source of bones to draw on for taming wolves.
