Dune Awakening: Navigation tips and tricks to travel safe and fast

Dune Awakening navigation tips
Arrakis is dangerous in Dune Awakening, but with these navigation tips, you will get around easy and securely (Image via Funcom)

We’ve been hip-deep in the sands of Dune Awakening for a few days now, and we’ve come up with a few tips and tricks to help you navigate safely. Of course, this doesn’t mean you can face down a Sandworm and live; that’s still asking to lose all of your gear. That said, if you’re trying to progress quickly without much fuss, there are some things you can do.

These things will become second nature after only a few hours in Dune Awakening, as these navigation tips did for us. Whether you’re playing solo or with a group, these will get you where you’re going without much fuss.

  • Prepare ahead of time if you’re going to be far from your base
  • Stick to the shade (or travel at night) to avoid dehydration
  • Set Respawn beacons around key locations on the map
  • Utilize the incredible power of Shigawire+Emperor’s Wings combo
  • Climb often, but remember to research and use Suspensors

One of the most important navigation tips for Dune Awakening is prepare ahead of time. Before I leave my base for any reason, I ask myself “What’s the purpose of this trip?” and plan accordingly. If it’s just farming resources nearby, I don’t really do a whole lot. There’s typically dew flowers of some variety nearby, so I don’t worry.

However, if, for example, I’m in Hagga Basin South and will be traveling clear across the map to get to the Trader Post, to turn in Contracts, I make sure I have a decent amount of water, say, in a Literjon. I always carry 3-4 blood containers with me, so I can transfer all of that into my hydration machine back in my base. That way, I’m never dehydrated.

Another important tip is to Stick to the Shade/travel at night, to avoid serious dehydration. Sticking to the shade prevents Sunstroke, which increases your thirst, and ultimately, runs your water out much faster. In addition, you also want to travel between rocky areas and avoid running across open sand too much.

You can of course, also take a Bene Gesserit skill, Sun Tolerance, to help with this as well. Personally, I try to take any trip at night if possible, to use as little water as possible. Another important navigation tip while playing Dune Awakening is to keep Respawn Beacons on hand and set them when exploring.

Research Beacons, when placed tactically, can be a real lifesaver, should you die. These give you a handy place to respawn if you die, so if you’re farming in a dangerous area, you can research/plant one nearby. I make sure to have several on hand, so I always know I can come back from an unfortunate situation.

One of our favorite things in Dune Awakening right now though, is combining the Trooper Skill Shigawire with The Emperor’s Wings Unique attachment, found in Imperial Testing Station No. 2. When you use Shigawire Claw, it attaches to something nearby, and propels you forward quickly.

Then, you hit the Emperor’s Wings to double jump, and give yourself incredible movement. It can be almost as fast as a bike, though not as safe. You can also take minor fall damage if you go from too great a height, so consider this before jumping. Practice makes perfect.

You can do this while climbing too, to get some overwhelmingly great air time, too! I use this to climb high structures quickly, by leaping wildly into the air. However, you have to be careful where you land; you can’t have this and a Suspensor on at the same time.

Which leads to my final important navigational tip for Dune Awakening: Climb often, but also make sure to have a Suspensor Belt on hand. You can research and equip these fairly early on, but you can also find them in early-game areas like Imperial Testing Station No. 2.

As long as a Suspensor Belt has power, you won’t take fall damage, so you can jump from amazing heights safely. I try to keep this on hand at all times, just in case I run out of Stamina, while climbing. Armed with this knowledge, you’re gonna go far, Offworlder.
