Asim Kamal: A Brief Biography

Asim Kamal Biography

Asim Kamal is a Pakistani cricketer, who was born on 31 May 1976. Preferring to deal with singles and doubles, Kamal had the ability to consolidate the middle order.

The batsmen who would readily stand at one end of the crease and let others bat around them are scarce. Asim Kamal was one such batsman.

Early Days

Kamal started playing for his home side, Karachi in 1997 at the age of 21. In his very first match in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, he played a fine inning of 81.

However, success did come so easily for Kamal. He had to keep his head down and work hard for five domestic seasons before the selectors noticed his presence. Centuries in consecutive matches against Dadu and Multan in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy in 2003 got him selected for the South African tour of Pakistan in the same year.

Debut

Following an impressive domestic season for Karachi Whites, Kamal made his debut against South Africa in October 2003 at the age of 27. He fell short of a century by one run but helped Pakistan win the match by 8 wickets.

His performance was impressive enough to earn him a seat in the Test series against India in 2005.

Kamal could not establish his prowess in the limited overs format and did not play any ODI or T20 match for his country.

Rise to Glory

After a spectacular debut against the Proteas, Kamal continued his form in the series against India. He scored two half centuries amidst the annihilation of Pakistan’s middle order throughout the series.

He displayed rare discipline and composure in the Sydney against Australia in 2005, where he scored 87 in the second innings. He continued his form against India in the 2005 series as well, scoring 91 in the first test. However, he was dropped from the side after 2005.

In the 20-innings long career, he established himself as the backbone of a fragile middle order. He continued to play in the domestic circuit till 2015. In the 84 matches played in first class cricket, Kamal scored eight centuries while averaging 37.53.

Low Points

Kamal was dropped from the side after 2005 due to his poor form. He was called back for the home series in 2009 against Sri Lanka. However, he did not get a chance to play and was soon dropped again.

Retirement

Asim Kamal played his last test in 2005 but continued to play first class cricket till 2015. He currently makes appearances on Pakistan news channels as a cricket analyst.
