The Summer Olympics of 2024 are scheduled to take place in Paris, France, from July 26 to August 11; between these dates, 329 events, including 32 sports, will be held in 16 cities, including Tahiti, as a subsite.

This will be Paris's third hosting of the Summer Olympics, following 1900 and 1924, and the sixth Olympic Games to be hosted in France, three of which will be the Winter Olympics.

Paris Hosted Olympics

Paris has hosted the Olympics three times: in 1900, 1924, and 2024. Each had its own significance and achievements, like the 1900 games, which were the second iteration of the Modern Olympics.

They were again held in 1924 as a tribute to the father of the Modern Olympic Games, Pierre de Coubertin, and made Paris the then-only city to host the Olympics twice. After this, it took a century for the Olympic Games to return to Paris in 2024.

1900 Paris Olympics

The first modern Olympic Games took place in 1896 in Athens, Greece, and the second edition took place in Paris over the course of five months, from May to October 1900. In those five months, 95 events took place between 24 countries and their 997 players, including 22 women who competed for the first time.

Notably, British tennis player Charlotte Cooper created history by being the first female to win a gold medal in the women's singles. In order to attract some of the same audience that the 1900 Exposition Universelle (1900 Paris Exposition) did, which was considerably more well-known at the time than the recently resurrected Olympics, the Paris 1900 Games were also added to the Exposition.

However, the name "International Competition of Physical Exercises and Sports" stuck because that is what the exhibition's organizers called the sporting events then. Many competitors were unaware that they had competed in the Olympic Games for years because the word "Olympic" was used so infrequently.

1924 Paris Olympics

The official name for the 1924 Paris Games was "Olympics," and the population of Paris saw a great deal of interest in them, in contrast to the, four years earlier, 1900 Paris Games. A total of 3,089 athletes competed, including 135 females, in 126 trials across 17 sports. The event, which lasted more than four months, began gaining worldwide notoriety since competitors from 44 nations took part, making it evident.

Before the athletic events, which took place from May 4 to July 27, 1924, there were competitions in architecture, literature, painting, sculpture, and music. The art event was significant since it carried on a legacy from the ancient Olympic Games that included cultural and sporting events taking place from March 15 to April 15, 1924.

Interestingly, the Olympic motto, which was coined by Henri Didon, "Citius, Altius, Fortius," translating to "Faster, Higher, Stronger," was first used in the Paris 1924 Games by Pierre de Coubertin, who popularized it.
