Joe Rau is a professional American wrestler who stands at 6 ft 1 in and competes in the 97kg division. Born on March 17, 1991, Joseph Patrick Rau or Joe Rau specializes in Greco-Roman and Folkstyle wrestling. He competed for the St. Patrick High School in Chicago and pursued his collegiate wrestling career at Elmhurst University.

Rau won the NCAA Division III Championships title in 2013 and had earned a bronze medal at the 2012 iteration of the event. Along with this, he is also a three-time Pan American champion. He won gold in the 2015 Santiago de Chile in the 80 kg weight class, In 2020 Ottawa Pan Am Championships, he clinched gold in the 87 kg category, and in the 2023 Buenos Aires, he again clinched gold in the 97 kg weight category.

Adding more medals to his wrestling resume,the Illinois native is also a two-time Grand Prix medalist (2015 and 2016), and a two-time US Open Champion (2016, 2019). Along with multiple wins in several prestigious competitions, he also faced his shares of adversities.

While being passionate about wrestling, the 33-year-old was equally passionate for improv comedy. He did the same when he had temporarily retired from wrestling. After a controversial experience of his loss to John Stefanowicz in the Greco-Roman 87 kg at the Tokyo Olympics Trials, he carried some grudges toward the sport and retired abruptly.

After this incident, he was performing improv comedy until he was approached by the US national team coach Herb Hau, who asked him to make a comeback in wrestling. After all these trials and tribulations, Rau has finally made his comeback by qualifying for the Paris Olympics. In the Olympic trials, he defeated Alan Vera and booked his berth in the 2024 Summer Games, which is slated to be held from July 26- August 11.
