According to an Olympics report, the Olympiad Games have been hosted in 23 cities and 20 countries, while the Olympic Winter Games have been held in 21 cities and 13 countries. However, the only continent that has never hosted an Olympic event is, interestingly, Africa, which lost both of its bid process attempts in 2004 and 2016.

The bidding process used to be extremely competitive, as many cities fought to host the Winter and Summer Games. But in recent years, fewer cities have competed for the title. Further, holding the Olympics is an extremely expensive deal, with buildings and infrastructure to be built specifically for the game.

This does, however, yield a profit from ecotourism; however, the infrastructure constructed for the games may be abandoned thereafter. To address these negative aspects, it has been proposed that a small number of cities be named permanent hosts rather than going through the entire bidding process.
