The governing body for the sport of sailing changed its name at the 2000 Summer Olympics; earlier, it was known as ‘yachting’.This was an effort to reduce the elite connotation associated with the term ‘yachting’.
The said governing body was World Sailing (WS), which itself changed its name twice. Originally, in 1907, the International Sailing Federation (ISAF), then the International Yacht Racing Union (IYRU), and since 2015, World Sailing.
Sailing, then yachting, debuted at the 1900 Summer Olympics, followed by another appearance in 1908, and then has been on every Olympic schedule. But the sailing events are usually revised given that the popularity of boats and wanes varies.
Further, since the inception of sailing at the 1900 Olympics, women have always participated along with men as sailors. A separate event was introduced in 1988 for the latter.
