Mikaela Shiffrin, a seven-time world champion and two-time Olympic gold medalist, was born in Vail, Colorado, on March 13, 1995. She gained attention almost immediately after placing in the top 15 of her first two NorAm Cup races. But two weeks later, she won a super combined in British Columbia, which raised eyebrows. Then, during her debut season, at the age of sixteen, ski fans and coaches went gawk at her podium finish at the World Cup. After that, she went on to completely take the world by storm by winning both the World Cup and the gold medal in slalom during her sophomore year.

In 2014, she achieved even greater success, winning five additional World Cup victories, an Olympic gold medal, podiums in the giant slalom, and a second consecutive slalom title. She truly amazed us in 2015 when she won her third consecutive slalom title and victoriously defended her World Championship slalom crown at Vail/Beaver Creek, her home venue, under extreme pressure. In December 2016, Shiffrin was sidelined after sustaining a knee injury during a warm-up run in Are, Sweden. That didn't deter her for very long, though, as she returned and triumphed in every other slalom competition she took part in while competing in the World Cup.

Shiffrin's professional achievements have elevated her to the status of a living legend; however, her remarkable 2019 season stands out as she broke records each weekend she spent on the mountain. Shiffrin's extraordinary accomplishments garnered attention from prominent mainstream magazines like The Washington Post, ESPN, USA Today, and others. These publications named her the "world's most dominant athlete," positioning her with elite athletes such as Serena Williams and LeBron James.

On March 11, 2023, in Are, Sweden, Shiffrin won her 87th World Cup, making her the all-time greatest alpine skier. This occurred during the 2022–2023 season. She won one more giant slalom race in Soldeu, Andorra, to cap the 2022–2023 season with 88 victories.

In 2023, she was recognized as a 'Pioneer' in TIME's 100 Most Influential People list, thanks to this achievement. That year, Shiffrin took home her first ESPY for Women's Sports' "Best Athlete."

How fast does Mikaela Shiffrin ski?

Not only is Mikaela Shiffrin an accomplished Alpine skier, but she is also a focused energy tornado who can descend mountains at speeds that would weaken most people's knees. But just how quickly does she move? The response varies depending on the event, much like in ski racing.

Downhill: The Breakneck Bullet

Imagine zooming down a mountain at a speed greater than most highway vehicles. That's the realm of downhill skiing, the fastest sport in the Alps, without a doubt. A World Cup downhill in December 2023 saw competitors, including Shiffrin, clock in at an astounding 115 kph (71 mph). There is a cost to this raw, thrilling speed: downhill courses are the riskiest, requiring steely nerves and unflinching attention to negotiate the steeps and jumps.

Giant Slalom: Power Meets Precision

A hint of speed on the downhill, with a hint of technical difficulty, is provided by the giant slalom. Shiffrin and other competitors run a longer, more flowing route with broader curves, usually clocking in at about 50 mph [4]. This is a lovely dance of strength and dexterity. Shiffrin requires both power and dexterity to keep control at high speeds while navigating small changes in terrain throughout long, sweeping turns.

Slalom: Lightning Strikes

In her area of specialty, slalom, Shiffrin genuinely excels. This competition puts dexterity and quick reflexes to the test. Shiffrin and other racers navigate a difficult course with several closely spaced gates. Here, the top speed is somewhat modest, at about 43 mph [4]. But don't let the numbers appear lower deceive you. Slalom is a highly skilled and controlled sport that requires continual twisting to maintain speed and balance over the complex course. The core of slalom is like racing through a maze while having to make split-second decisions.

Beyond the Numbers: The Mastery of Speed and Skill

Mikaela Shiffrin's skill and technique are more impressive than her speed when you watch her race down the slopes. Shiffrin is a master of both speed and precision, which is a necessary combination for alpine skiing. She exhibits a knack that makes her stand out, whether she's taking on the technical challenges of slalom or the speeds of downhill skiing. Observing her traverse the course is evidence of her ability to push the boundaries of what is possible on skis.
