American Family Field History/American Family Field Construction and Cost

The construction for the American Family Field started after the demand for a new stadium increased in 1993. The fans were not happy with either the 1953 stadium or the Milwaukee County Stadium as they failed to provide a good gaming experience. Moreover, they also demanded a retractable roof stadium to protect the fans from the weather. Accordingly, the construction of the stadium started on November 9, 1996. Despite multiple structural challenges during construction, in March 2001, a grass field was added to the stadium. The American Family Field was finally introduced and opened to the fans on April 6, 2001.

This stadium is notable for its retro-modern style designs. The roof of the stadium is uniquely designed. It has been shaped like a fan and is retractable and can be opened and closed according to weather. The roof panels open and close in a sweeping motion from first base to third base and finally the center field. During cold weathers, the roof is closed and the temperature inside the stadium is kept 30 degrees fahrenheit so that fans can enjoy the game and not get freezed. Another important feature of the stadium is the Aurora Health Care Bullpen - a picnic area with a relaxing atmosphere that can support 75 fans at a time. The scoreboard overlooking the centerfield resembles a gas pump. It is a 5,940 sq. feet 1080 display and is 55 feet high and 110 feet wide. The topmost upper deck, section 422 has a statue of Bob Uecker, a Milwaukee legend. They also created a sensory friendly area in June 2022 for fans who suffer from sensory processing disorders.

The field in the stadium is Kentucky Bluegrass. The left field is 342 feet and the left center field is 371 feet. The right field is 337 feet while the right center field is 374 feet. The center field is 400 feet and the backstop is 56 feet.

The construction of the stadium cost $400 million in 2001, which was equal to $661 million as of 2022. The stadium was constructed by NBBJ and HKS Inc.
