Yankee Stadium is the official stadium for the New York Yankees in Major League Baseball (MLB). Nicknamed as “The House that Jeter Built” and “The House That George Built”, this stadium is based in The Bronx, New York City, New York, United States. The team has been using this stadium for their home games since 2009. It is also notable for being the costliest stadium in MLB.

Yankee Stadium’s History/ Yankee Stadium Construction and Cost

The Yankee Stadium is actually the second stadium with the same name. The original Yankee Stadium was used by the team from 1923-1973 and from 1976-2008. Despite renovating the original stadium extensively in 1976, the team found it to be inadequate for their games. Therefore, they started the search for a grander baseball stadium in the 1980’s. The NYC Mayor back then promised to help the team in financial matters for constructing the new stadium as a means of preventing them from relocating to New Jersey. In 2002, Rudy Giulani, NYC Mayor, agreed for the construction of new baseball stadiums for the New York Yankees as well as for the New York Mets. However, his successor Michael Bloomberg rejected the deal.

Eventually, the failed bid for the 2012 Olympics in New York forced the administration to approve the construction of two new baseball stadiums for both MLB teams. Accordingly, the construction for the Yankee Stadium started August 16, 2006 near the original Yankee Stadium. Despite undergoing several controversies about funding and construction delays, the stadium was completed. It was made accessible for the public on April 3, 2009.

The outside of the Yankee Stadium resembles that of the original stadium. Over 11,000 Indiana limestones and blocks of granite were used to construct the exterior of the stadium. However, the interior has been constructed differently to give it a new look. There are more than 2000 photos depicting the team’s success over the years. The stadium has 56 luxury suites and nameplates made of gold leaves above the gates. The roof of the stadium is frieze-lined like the original stadium but made of zinc-coated steel while the original was made up of copper. Moreover, the seats in the stadium are provided with cup holders and cushions. The southern wall of the stadium has the Great Hall, which is a giant concourse of 31,000 square feet and can support 1,500 fans. This area has impressive posters of 20 most famous players of the New York Yankees. Notably, there is also the Monument Park, which honors the legends from the team.

For kids, there is the SunRun Kids Clubhouse which has a small themed playground. The New York Yankees Museum near Gate 6 is notable for “Ball Wall '' signed by many players among other memorabilia. The scoreboard of the stadium in center field is the 3rd largest in the United States. The stadium board has 1,100 HD monitors and fiber optic cables of 230 miles for the entertainment of fans. The clubhouse is 30,000 square feet and it has electronic lockers, a video room, a therapy room and an underwater treadmill. There are 25 permanent concession stands and over 100 movable concession stands. There are notable restaurants and sports bars like The Hard Rock Cafe and the NYY Steak, where premium fans can get their foods cooked by celebrity chefs.

The stadium field resembles that of the original stadium and has been made using Kentucky Bluegrass. The left field is 318 feet and the left center field is 399 feet. The right field is 314 feet and the right center field is 385 feet. The center field is 408 feet while the backstop is 52 feet and 4 inches. The construction of the Yankee Stadium cost around $1.5 billion - $2.3 billion in 2009, which was equal to around $1.81 billion to $2.8 billion as of 2020. Populous worked on the construction of the stadium.
