At the age of sixteen, Contreras began attending a baseball academy run by the Chicago Cubs in Venezuela. He signed with the Cubs as an international free agent in 2009 and was assigned to the DSL Cubs to make his professional debut. The team promoted him to the majors on June 17, 2016. Conteras made history alongside his brother William Conteras at the 2022 All-Star game, when they became just the fifth pair of brothers to play in the same All-Star Game. William Conteras' career took a new turn when he signed with the St. Louis Cardinals before the 2023 season committing himself there till at least till the 2027 season.
