Badrinath was signed by the Chennai Super Kings for $50,000 ahead of the inaugural edition of the IPL. The Tamil Nadu batsman was one of the pillars of CSK's strong batting unit during his six-year stint (2008-2013) with the franchise contributing consistently with the willow across seasons.

He was pivotal in the Chennai Super Kings' two title-winning seasons (2010, 2011) amassing 356 and 396 runs respectively. In the 95 matches he played for the Men in Yellow, Badrinath scored 1441 runs at a strike-rate of 118.89 with his highest score being 71*.

A reliable batsman and a consistent performer at the domestic level, Badrinath went unsold at the 2014 IPL auction much to the surprise of many in the Indian cricketing fraternity. His fortunes changed in the following season (2015 IPL) as he was bought by the Royal Challengers Bangalore for INR 30 lakhs. But he did not make a single appearance for the Virat Kohli-led franchise in that season which turned out to be his last IPL stint.
