IPL 2018: Highest individual score for each franchise in IPL history

Is there a place for either of them on this list?
Is there a place for either of them on this list?

The season of non-stop, thrilling and breath-taking cricket is back again. On the very first match of the 11th edition of Indian Premier League, two of the best teams in the history, Mumbai Indians and the returning Chennai Super Kings, wrote another chapter in the history of their monumental rivalry and presented the fans with a riveting contest.

Unlike their previous two opening encounters, it was the Yellow Army that managed to get the last laugh this time, thanks to some impeccable batting show by Dwayne Bravo and Kedar Jadhav, who hit 10 runs in two balls to take the team to a win off the last ball. If the first match was a sign of things to happen, the batsmen will once again make merry on the batting-friendly IPL pitches.

From the very first edition, IPL has been considered as a batsmen-dominated league, with Brendon McCullum's destructive inning in the first match in 2008 still fresh in the minds of fans. Though the bowlers have managed to thrill the fans with their talent, it is the batsmen that tend to dominate in IPL.

With several batting records expected to be broken in this edition of the IPL, we take a look at the highest individual scores for each franchise that has ever been part of Indian Premier League.

#13 Kochi Tuskers Kerala (81, Brendon McCullum)

The inning that rendered Tendulkar's century worthless.
The inning that rendered Tendulkar's century worthless

The now-defunct Kochi Tuskers Kerala were part of the Indian Premier League for only a single season in 2011. The team, which had the likes of Mahela Jayawardene, Brad Hodge and Muttiah Muralitharan in their line up, had a lacklustre season which saw them reeling near the bottom of the table. Brendon McCullum, however, played a knock that gave the Kerala fans something to cheer for in an otherwise drab season.

Playing against Mumbai Indians in their own backyard, Kochi were given a mammoth target of 183 courtesy a splendid hundred by Sachin Tendulkar. With their back against the wall, Kochi needed an inning similar to Tendulkar's, and McCullum took charge that night.

His inning of 81 runs from 60 balls, which included 10 fours and 2 sixes, might not be his most swash-buckling inning, but it was enough to take Kochi to a memorable win and render another hundred by Tendulkar worthless.

#12 Gujarat Lions (84, Suresh Raina)

The day he played a captain's knock.
The day he played a captain's knock

Gujarat Lions had a memorable debut season in 2016 after finishing top on the points table. Hence, there were high expectations of the players in 2017 as well. However, the team started the season poorly, losing 4 of their first 5 matches, and had to play catch up for the rest of the season. Someone had to step up and take the responsibility of playing that one match-winning knock for the next match, and who better than the skipper to do that?

With Kolkata Knight Riders, their opponents in the match, posting a challenging 187, Raina took control and play a defiant knock. Raina's knock of 84 runs in 46 balls, which included 9 fours and 4 sixes, made the giant total look gettable. With good support from Brendon McCullum and Ravindra Jadeja at different stages of the inning, Raina took his team to a memorable win in just 18.2 overs and brought the Lions back into the competition.

#11 Pune Warriors India (86, Jesse Ryder)

The only bright spot in Pune Warrior's squad.
The only bright spot in Pune Warrior's squad

Despite possessing a strong squad, featuring the likes of Yuvraj Singh, Michael Clarke, Steven Smith and Angelo Mathews, Pune Warriors India had a disappointing stint in the IPL, finishing ahead of just Delhi Daredevils in 2011 and 2013 while sliding to the bottom of the table in 2012. However, even in that disastrous 2012 season, Jesse Ryder played a memorable inning that later ended up being the highest individual score by a Pune Warrior's batsman.

Playing against an in-form Delhi Daredevils in Feroz Shah Kotla, Jesse Ryder played the best T20 inning of his life. Ably supported by Skipper Sourav Ganguly, Ryder smashed 7 fours and 4 sixes en route to a solid 86 runs from 58 balls.

Ryder's assault was enough for PWI, as the team posted 192/3 in their 20 overs. The target was a little too much for DD, as they could only manage 172, allowing PWI to pick up memorable win by 20 runs.

#10 Rising Pune Supergiants (103*, Ben Stokes)

Ben Stokes was the MVP of last season.
Ben Stokes was the MVP of last season

One thing is certainly very much clear - Ben Stokes is easily the best all-rounder of this generation. Be it playing for England in Tests or for some domestic team in county criket, Ben Stokes has the ability of winning games on his own. He was the anchor that guided Rising Pune Supergiants to the finals in 2017, and he was at his very best during his memorable century against Gujarat Lions in Pune.

Batting first, Gujarat Lions put a respectable total of 161 on the board. The chase didn't start well for RPS as they were reduced to 10/3 in just the second over. Coming in to bat at number 5, Ben Stokes batted like a man possessed.

With MS Dhoni holding the other end, Stokes showed his shot-making ability, smashing 7 fours and 6 sixes en route a memorable 103* from just 63 balls, which was enough to take RPS to victory with just one ball left.

#9 Rajasthan Royals (104*, by Shane Watson)

The only player to win two Player of the Tournament awards.
The only player to win two Player of the Tournament awards

Shane Watson is definitely one player who can actually lay his claim for one of the most consistent players during the first 10 years of the IPL. For almost 8 seasons between 2008 and 2015, Watson was the numero-uno batsman as well as bowler for the Rajasthan Royals.

He is the only player to have won two Player of the tournament awards, winning the top prize in 2008 and 2013 when he led RR to the play-offs. Hence, it made sense that he also has the highest individual score by any player for the Rajasthan based franchise.

In a do-or-die match against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2015, Watson started off the inning perfectly, building a strong 80-run opening partnership with Rahane. After his partner's dismissal, Watson took the charge and started bashing the ball all around the ground.

Watson's inning of 104* from 59 balls, which included 9 fours and 5 sixes, took Rajasthan to a mammoth total of 199/6. The target turned out to be a little too much for KKR, who could only manage 190 in 20 overs, giving RR a win by 9 runs and a ticket to the playoffs.

#8 Mumbai Indians (114*, by Sanath Jayasuriya)

The man who ushered a new era in cricket.
The man who ushered a new era in cricket

The first decade of IPL has passed so quickly that it just seems like yesterday when Tendulkar and Jayasuriya, two of the best openers of all time, came out to bat together for the first time.

Jayasuriya, in particular, was probably the only bright spot in the lacklustre inaugural season Mumbai Indians had, ending the season as the third highest run scorer. Jayasuriya was at his destructive best during a match against CSK where he single-handedly destroyed the Chennai bowling line up.

With CSK posting a total of 156/6, Jayasuriya took charge and went on a rampage from the word go. So destructive and dominating was Jayasuriya's batting that day that his partners only scored 28 runs between them. With 9 fours and 11 sixes, Jayasuriya scored 114* from just 48 balls and took Mumbai Indians across the line in just 13.5 overs. Even after 10 years and 3 IPL titles, no MI player has managed to score more runs in an inning!

#7 Deccan Chargers (117*, Andrew Symonds)

One of the best limited-overs all rounder.
One of the best limited-overs all rounder

The 5-year tenure of Deccan Chargers as an IPL franchise was nothing short of a roller coaster ride. Despite winning the tournament's second edition and making it to the play offs in the following season, DC endured a rather dry spell in all the remaining seasons.

Their maiden season can be, at best, termed horrendous, as the team only managed to win 2 out of their 14 matches. However, it was in the inaugural season in 2008 that a DC player scored the highest individual score for the franchise, and who better to take the honours of this record than the one and only Andrew Symonds?

Facing a strong Rajasthan Royals line-up, Deccan Chargers' inning did not start in the best possible way, with the team losing 2 wickets in just 3 overs. Andrew Symonds then took charge and started hitting the ball all around the park.

Accompanied by a young Rohit Sharma, Symonds smashed the RR bowlers for 11 fours and 7 sixes en route to a memorable 117* from just 53 balls and took DC to a mammoth total of 214/5. Even though RR managed to win the match courtesy a pair of blistering knocks by Pathan and Smith, Symonds etched his name in the history books as he scored the highest individual score by a DC batsman.

#6 Delhi Daredevils (119, Virender Sehwag)

The first captain of Delhi Daredevils.
The first captain of Delhi Daredevils

Delhi Daredevils were the least successful team during the first decade of IPL. Despite having world class players like AB de Villiers, David Warner and Ross Taylor in their squad, the team often struggled to win matches on a constant basis and were near the bottom of the table during most of the seasons.

They, however, managed to reach the play offs in three seasons and there was one player who was instrumental in each of those appearances. The same man also has the highest individual score among all DD batsmen, and that man is the Nawab of Najafgarh, Virender Sehwag.

Against a bowling heavy Deccan Chargers team in 2011, Delhi Daredevils were chasing a target of 176. Despite losing three partners in quick succession, Sehwag didn't get bogged down and smashed the Chargers' bowlers, especially Amit Mishra.

By the time Sehwag got out in the 17th over, he had scored 119 runs from 56 balls, hit 13 fours and smashed the ball out of the park 6 times. His onslaught was enough for Delhi Daredevils to capitalise, as they went on to chase the target in the 19th over with 4 wickets in hand.

#5 Kings XI Punjab (122, Virender Sehwag)

Second entry for the destructive opener.
Second entry for the destructive opener

The Nawab of Najafgarh makes another entry into this illustrious list, and, this time out, he is taking the top spot for the Franchise from Mohali. After making it to semi-finals of the inaugural edition of IPL, Kings XI Punjab endured a rather dry spell in IPL as they struggled at the bottom end of the table during the subsequent 5 seasons.

A strong performance by the revamped squad saw them reach the play offs in 2014, but they needed a dazzling performance against CSK to book their place in the finals. Enter Virender Sehwag, who was having a rather lukewarm IPL till that point.

Batting first against a solid bowling line up in a do-or-die situation was never gonna be an easy task, but Viru had something else on his mind. Right from the very first ball of the inning, Sehwag started bashing the ball all around the ground. With propitious support from Manan Vohra and David Miller from the other end, Sehwag smashed 12 fours and 8 sixes during his 122-run inning from just 58 balls.

His knock propelled KXIP to a gargantuan total of 226/6, which turned out to a little to much for CSK despite an early scare from Suresh Raina, and eventually led to a 24-run victory for the team, booking them a ticket for the finals for the first time.

#4 Sunrisers Hyderabad (126, David Warner)

His contributions to SRH are incomparable.
His contributions to SRH are incomparable

Despite his recent suspension and all his on-field spats with opposition players, there is no denying the fact that David Warner is easily one of the greatest batsmen of this generation. The man was the driving force behind Sunrisers Hyderabad's victorious campaign in 2016, and had consistently been their numero-uno batsman in the previous two season.

Warner holds the record for the highest knock by an SRH batsman and boy was it some knock! Playing against an equally impressive Kolkata side in Hyderabad in 2017, Warner began smacking the ball from the word go.

So destructive and commanding was Warner's inning that his opening partner, Shikhar Dhawan, just seemed like a spectator during their 139-run opening partnership. By the time Warner got out in the 17th over, he had scored 126 runs in just 59 balls, which included 10 boundaries and 8 maximums.

The mammoth knock propelled SRH to 209/3 in 20 overs, which turned out to be a tough task for KKR as they could only manage 161 in their quota of overs. With Warner suspended from cricket for a year, SRH are gonna have a tough time finding a suitable replacement for their premier player.

#3 Chennai Super Kings (127, Murali Vijay)

The Monk of Indian Cricket.
The Monk of Indian Cricket

Easily the most consistent and among the most successful squads in IPL history, Chennai Super Kings are the only team that have appeared in the play offs of all the seasons that they have been part of, with the team appearing in a record 6 finals between 2008 and 2015.

One of the major reasons of their unprecedented success is their ability to make superstars out of rather low-key performers, and none of this is more true for any player than one Murali Vijay. Vijay was their breakthrough star in 2010 and played the best knock by any player that has ever played for CSK in the 3rd season.

Playing against a strong Rajasthan Royals squad in Chennai, Vijay started his inning slowly, with his opening partner Hayden taking the charge. It was, however, after Hayden's dismissal that Vijay began just knocking the ball out of the ground.

Aptly supported by Albie Morkel, who was building his own inning as well, Murali Vijay oozed past the 100-run mark. His inning of 127 runs from just 56 balls, which included 8 fours and 11 sixes, helped CSK reach a huge total of 246/5. Despite efforts from Naman Ojha and Shane Watson, RR could only manage 223/5, giving CSK a 23 run win.

#2 Kolkata Knight Riders (158*, Brendon McCullum)

Successful for every franchise he played for.
Successful for every franchise he played for

Has it actually been 10 years since we witnessed a blistering start to IPL? I mean, it just feels like yesterday that two batsmen came out to bat for the first time in IPL, and one of them just completely destroyed the opposition bowling lineup with an inning that will be remembered for a long, long time.

Kolkata Knight Riders, before they were revamped under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir, endured a rather dry spell in IPL for 3 years, scrapping near the bottom of the table in all those years. However, it wasn't the case when they played their first ever match in Kolkata in 2008, as Brendon McCullum played the inning of his lifetime and gave IPL the perfect start it needed.

Asked to bat first by Royal Challengers Bangalore, KKR got off to a stunning start as McCullum took the charge on the bowlers from the word go. Not caring who the bowler at the other end was, McCullum played like a one-man army and bashed the RCB bowlers for 10 boundaries and 13 maximums enroute to a then-highest individual score of 158* runs in just 73 balls.

His inning catapulted KKR to a gargantuan total of 222/3 in 20 overs. Already rattled by the decimation of their bowlers, the target turned out to be an uphill climb as they collapsed for a mere 82 runs.

#1 Royal Challengers Bangalore (175* by Chris Gayle)

Highest Individual score in T20 cricket.
Highest Individual score in IPL

It just feels right that the highest individual score by a player in a T20 match belongs to the best T20 player in the history of cricket, and what better platform to hit that record-making knock than in the biggest T20 league in the whole world.

Chris Gayle was part of Kolkata Knight Riders for 3 years, but his IPL career took a turn for the good after he joined the RCB squad in 2011. He was highly responsible for RCB's impressive performance in the last few years, and his career reached the pinnacle in 2013, when he single handedly destroyed the Pune Warriors India's bowling line up with easily the best batting display in T20 cricket history.

After being asked to bat first by Aaron Finch, Chris Gayle launched an attack on the PWI bowlers straightaway, bashing Mitchell Marsh for 28 runs in a single over. Breaking the record for the fastest T20 century, Gayle reached his hundred even before the 10th before, taking only 30 balls.

Perfectly supported by Dilshan and AB, Gayle hit 13 fours and a record 17 sixes to his career-best inning of 175* in just 66 balls. The spartan-type inning propelled RCB to a record total of 263/5. Already rattled by the decimation of their bowling line up, PWI could only manage 133/9 in their 20 overs, giving RCB a victory by 130 runs. Till this date, 175* is the highest individual score in any competitive T20 match.
