The Mumbai Indians think tank must be completed for choosing Alzarri Joseph as a replacement for the injured New Zealand fast bowler Adam Milne. The West Indian fast bowler Joseph was in the news when he showed a lot of character to make his appearance on the field in a recent Test match against England even after hearing the news about the demise of his mother.

He would not have made his IPL debut against SRH had Lasith Malinga been available. As it turned out, Joseph made use of that opportunity to return with record-breaking bowling figures of 6 for 12 in IPL history.

Joseph broke the record of the previous best bowling figures of 6 for 14 held by Sohail Tanvir in the first IPL in 2008. As far as the record of a debutant is concerned, he has bettered Andrew Tye’s best debut bowling record of 5 for 17.

When Alzarri Joseph came on to bowl, SRH chasing a moderate score of 138, was comfortably placed at 34 for 1 in 4 overs needing another 104 runs in 16 overs. His very first ball in IPL fashioned him the prize wicket of the orange cap holder David Warner.

It was a nothing delivery bowled wide outside the off-stump which Warner somehow contrived to drag it onto his stumps. His first over in IPL was a wicket maiden. Joseph got his second wicket in his second over with a short-pitched delivery which the in-form Vijay Shankar skied to Hardik Pandya at the point.

Joseph came back for his second spell in the 16th over of the innings and took two wickets off successive deliveries. While Deepak Hooda played onto a full-length delivery, Rashid Khan succumbed to the bouncer.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar managed to avert the hat-trick but was cleaned up one ball later in the first ball of Alzarri’s next over. Now He had 3 wickets in 4 balls and a 5 wicket haul. Joseph went on to break the 11-year-old IPL record when he had the last man Siddarth Kaul caught behind.

As a result of Joseph’s terrific bowling efforts, SRH was bundled out for 96, their lowest IPL total. Alzarri Joseph had his dream IPL debut.
