Kolkata Knight Riders had a decent IPL season last year. They finished third in league stage to qualify for playoffs, but lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the second qualifier and eventually lost a spot in 2018 final. Their success has been largely due to the likes of Dinesh Kartik and Chris Lynn, who have been quite consistent throughout the tournament. They have been very well supported by Sunil Narine, who was promoted as an opener on numerous occasions last season.

With most the players in the batting unit retained, things are expected to be quite similar for them for the upcoming season. But one thing which the team lacked was a regular opener who can open with Chris Lynn on regular basis. The management had tried a few options, which included promotion of Narine. Despite being successful on a few occasions, one can't judge him as a regular opener, which the management would like to address during the auctions and Mohammed Shahzad could be the right man for the job.

Shahzad can do that job perfectly for them and can also help them, in relieving some pressure from skipper Dinesh Kartik by keeping the wickets and his selection would be a huge plus situation for the franchise.
