Robin Uthappa has not been up to the mark for Kolkata Knight Riders in the last two editions of the IPL. In 2019, the Karnataka-born batsman's slow strike-rate frustrated the team on many occasions, leading to him getting for a few games too..

Uthappa's margin for failure will be finer in IPL 2020. Dinesh Karthik, Shubman Gill and Nitish Rana are likely to occupy the domestic batsmen slots, leaving Uthappa in a do-or-die situation within the team. Moreover, after the lackluster show last season, he will be under added pressure to perform better in 2020.

Multi-functional players are very useful in T20s, more so in a competition like the IPL. Uthappa's ability to keep wickets was always one of the main reasons why KKR stuck with him in their team. Of course, his form with the bat was also very good then.

However, after Karthik was picked by the franchise, Uthappa was relieved of his duties behind the stumps. Since Uthappa's role in the team now is of a pure batsman, the management will not have to worry about his glove-work while considering dropping him from the playing XI.

On the other hand, domestic wicket-keepers are an asset for a few teams in the competition. Uthappa's experience in the IPL will be a bonus for them. And playing in a different team atmosphere could also work in his favor.

Hence, playing for a different side next season will be on Uthappa's mind too.
