The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) named veteran South African batter Faf du Plessis as their skipper for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2022) on Saturday (March 12).

Speaking on the live stream of RCB UNBOX, Faf du Plessis' close buddy AB de Villiers pointed out that the franchise has made the right decision to appoint the seasoned campaigner as the captain for IPL 2022.

De Villiers mentioned that he had expected the Bangalore team would hand du Plessis the leadership role after they picked him at the mega-auction last month. He seemed confident about the Proteas star taking the team to greater heights during his captaincy stint. De Villiers said:

"Our new captain, and who better than my good friend, Faf du Plessis. This announcement comes as no surprise to me after RCB picked up Faf at the auction. He's an amazing leader and the perfect man for the job. He has a fantastic tactical mind and Faf will have great support around him. No doubt that he will do a wonderful job for the RCB family. All the very best, my good friend and all the very best, team RCB. Ee Sala Cup Namde."

RCB were in search of a new skipper for IPL 2022 with Virat Kohli relinquishing the captaincy after the previous season of the cash-rich league. It is worth mentioning that Kohli led the side for nine long years before stepping down.

Faf du Plessis, who was roped in by the team for ₹7 crores, is all set to be at the helm of the side for this year’s tournament.

RCB to kick off IPL 2022 campaign on March 27

Bangalore will take on Punjab Kings in their opening game of the season at the DY Patil Stadium. They are placed in Group B alongside Chennai Super Kings, Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

RCB are yet to clinch their maiden title in the flagship T20 tournament. They will be keen to come up with an inspiring performance this time around as they go into the competition with a new leader.
