Under-fire Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI) president Narayanswami Srinivasan has informed the Supreme Court(SC) that he will be stepping down from his post after the apex court had earlier suggested him to do so to allow a fair investigation into the betting and match-fixing scandal that rocked the Indian Premier League(IPL) in 2013.

In what was a big day at the SC hearing, the court proposed that former India opener Sunil Gavaskar be made the interim president of the board till it gives a verdict in the matter. The court also made a big call by proposing to the BCCI that Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals be ousted from IPL 7 in the wake of their alleged involvement in betting and spot-fixing activities.

The court has given the BCCI a 24-hour period to take a decision on its proposals.

The proposals made by the SC to the BCCI are :

  • Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals should not be allowed to take part in IPL 7
  • Sunil Gavaskar should be made interim BCCI President in place of N.Srinivasan till a final verdict has been issued in the betting and spot fixing case
  • Anyone involved with the India Cements group should not be involved with the BCCI

Hearing into the IPL betting and spot fixing scandal will continue in the court tomorrow when the apex court is also expected to pass an interim order on the scandal.

It will be interesting to see what the BCCI does from here on. The ball is firmly in their court.
