The Bunker, an "unscripted" WWI-themed narrative for consoles and PC, is the fourth chapter in Frictional Games' globally renowned survival-horror epic Amnesia, except from the fact that it's being developed by the same team that brought one of the most acclaimed horror IPs to fruition.

Since revealing the project in December last year, the company has only released information about it.

What is Amnesia The Bunker about?

Frictional Games, the creators of SOMA and Penumbra Overture, will release Amnesia: The Bunker, a first-person survival-horror game. While unconnected to its third game, Amnesia, Rebirth, The Bunker will attempt to keep several essential characteristics, most notably the hide-and-seek gameplay and darkly bright visuals. Other than that, The Bunker will return with a new setting, characters, and a horrific World War I theme.

In Frictional Games’ own words: “Amnesia: The Bunker is a first-person horror game set in a desolate WW1 Bunker. Face the oppressing terrors stalking the dark corridors. Search for and use the tools and weapons at your disposal while keeping the lights on at all costs. Overcome fear, persevere, and make your way out alive.”

Amnesia: The Bunker Gameplay

The Bunker, like The Dark Descent, will cultivate a semi-open world setting—a locale that, like its predecessors, will provide unique experiences in each legitimate play-through. The Bunker will follow the original Amnesia model, with stealth-based gameplay, puzzle-solving elements, and cat-and-mouse chases with jump scares.

According to Frictional Games: “Solve things your way in a semi-open world. You must explore and experiment with making your way out. Figure out what’s happening down here – what happened to the other soldiers? Where have all the officers gone? What diabolical nightmare lurks underneath this hellscape? Unravel the mysteries of the Bunker and get to know the nooks and crannies of this cruel sandbox to up your odds of survival.”

Since when is Amnesia: The Bunker in development?

Frictional Games, the renowned developer behind some of the generation's most famous horror IPs, announced in December 2022 that The Bunker will be released on consoles and PC in March 2023. This was pushed back until May, and the game's plot was revealed in an exclusive trailer. Amnesia: The Bunker will be the fourth main installment in the series' timeline, after Amnesia: Rebirth in 2020. It is not a sequel but will have many gameplay concepts and designs.
