After a long gap between mainline games, Street Fighter 6 will be released later this year. So far, SF6 appears to be improving on its predecessor, with a strong visual identity and a slew of new fighters at launch. Capcom has largely removed the veil on Street Fighter 6, revealing a great deal about the sixth installment in the series.

Street Fighter 6 gameplay

Capcom has added a number of new features to Street Fighter 6, and Drive Gauge is one of them. It's a new battle system mechanic designed to encourage more "creativity." This gauge can be used to conduct five different defensive or offensive methods. Capcom revealed quite a bit in a PlayStation Blog post about Drive Impact as they wrote, "A Drive Impact is a powerful strike that can absorb an opponent’s incoming attack and can lead to a wall splat. Use Drive Parry to repel your opponent’s attack and refill your Drive Gauge. Cancel out of a Drive Parry or normal attack into a Drive Rush to quickly close in on your opponent.

“Overdrive Arts are similar to EX Moves from past games that power up your Special Moves. Use Drive Reversal to perform a counterattack to get you out of tight situations. One gauge, five techniques, unlimited possibilities. Use your creativity to choose which technique to utilize and when." With the introduction of the Modern Control Type, Street Fighter 6 intends to make the game more accessible to novice players. While the Traditional Control Type will remain available, the new type will allow for "easier inputs" for Special moves, allowing you to unleash your extravagant fury by just pressing the Special Move button with a directional input.

Another new feature for Street Fighter 6 is the Real-Time Commentary feature, which allows actual combat game commentators (Jeremy 'Vicious' Lopex in English and Aru in Japanese are confirmed) to lend their voices to the game, commentating on your fights as they happen and providing gameplay explanations.

What platforms will Street Fighter 6 release on?

According to Street Fighter 6's extensive official website, it will be a cross-platform and cross-generational release, starring on PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC, but also debuting in a less graphically appealing variant on PS4. It appears that the game will not be coming to the Xbox One, which is an unusual omission given that the PS4 will receive a version.

Not only that, Street Fighter 6 has crossplay and that has been confirmed by the devs. This is, of course, a key aspect in developing a sizable, steady player base, so the announcement is quite welcome.

When will Street Fighter 6 be released?

Street Fighter 6's release date was officially revealed at The Game Awards in December 2022 - it will be released on June 2, 2023. As a result, with the release date approaching, pre-orders are already available. Not only that, but Street Fighter 6 will include both a standard version and a Deluxe Edition, including an Ultimate Edition and Collector's Edition also in the mix.
