Microsoft, the tech giant behind the PC revolution, created and owns the Xbox video game brand. The original Xbox was released in North America on November 15, 2001. The name Xbox is an abbreviation for DirectX Box, a reference to Microsoft's graphics API, DirectX.

The Xbox brand includes five video game consoles, as well as applications (games), streaming services, Xbox network, and a development studio called Xbox Game Studios. The majority of games released for the original Xbox are backwards compatible and can be played on its successor. Xbox and Xbox Live-branded games have also been released for Microsoft Windows, Android, and iOS devices.
