The EFL Championship Play-offs are contested every year to determine the identity of the third team to get promoted to the Premier League. The teams that finish among the top two in the EFL Championship gain automatic promotion whereas those that finish 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th battle it out for the remaining spot.
Currently, Sheffield United, West Brom, Bristol City and Aston Villa occupy the said positions in the EFL Championship.
The play-off format stipulates that the team finishing in 3rd plays the side that finishes 6th while the team
placed 4th locks horns with the side ending the season in 5th. The ties would be two-legged affairs with the higher ranked team in each instance playing the first leg away from home.
The winners of both ties would then compete with each other in a one-off final at Wembley with the victorious side gaining a ticket to the Premier League.
The Championship playoff final is set to be held on the 27th of May, 2019.
Unlike Champions League two-leg ties, the Championship play-offs don’t take into account away goals when deciding deadlocks. Thus, if the games are level at the end of two legs, the game goes to extra time and then potentially penalties.
The final of the play-off is generally considered as the richest game in England with the winners looking at a possible increase of around £60m in revenue, due to its introduction into the Premier League.
