The Ligue 1 is the top-tier professional football league in France. The league initially started with 20 teams, but the number of teams in the league has changed several times over the years. A total of 18 clubs play in the league since 2023. Each club play against one another twice in a single season: one home and one away game. The league takes place from August to May, with a total of 34 matches over the course of one season.
The highest level of the French football league system was officially founded in 1930 and rebranded as the Ligue 1 in 2002. 87 Ligue 1 campaigns have happened, as of May 2025. Olympique Lillois became the first club to win the Ligue 1 title in the 1932-33 season. Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) are the most successful club in the history of the competition with 13 titles. Marseille (75) have featured in most Ligue 1 seasons.
