Is Copa America every 2 years or 4 years?
The Copa America is held every four years as per its latest format. It is also held in the same year as the Euros for every edition.
The tournament has been inconsistent with its schedule since its inception. It was first held in 1916 and subsequently conducted annually. In some cases, they were conducted every two or three years. Until the 2000s, there was no clear schedule for the tournament to be held after a certain number of years.
In 2007, the Copa America was adapted to the quadrennial format, with it being held every four years. The competition took place in 2007, 2011 and in 2015 as per the format. However, an exception was made and it was held again in 2016 to celebrate the Copa America’s centenary year. The next edition was held in 2019 as per schedule (four years after the 2015 edition).
In 2019, there was another change made to the Copa America’s schedule. It was decided that the competition will be held in 2019 and 2020 in order to align it with the Euros, which are also held every four years. Both the Euros and the Copas were eventually postponed to 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
As of now, the Copa America is supposed to be held every four years. The current edition is set to begin in 2024 along with the Euros and the next edition will be held in 2028.
