Ranji Trophy 2021-22 will be the 87th season of the tournament. Ranji Trophy is the premier first-class cricket tournament in India. The season will take place from 13 January 2022 to 20 March 2022. Saurashtra were the previous winners of the coveted Ranji Trophy. The previous edition, that is; the 2020-21 edition of the tournament was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Players will have to undergo a mandatory five-day quarantine period. As per ANI, each Ranji Trophy team squad will have a maximum of 30 members. Out of the 30, there has to be a minimum of 20 players. The rest can be the management and support staff members.
There are a total of 38 teams divided into six groups. Group A, B, C, D, and E have six teams each and Plate Group have 8 teams in it. The groups have been decided based on the team's performance in the previous edition of the Trophy.

A total of 177 matches will be played in Ranji 2021-22. There will be 162 matches in the league stage of the tournament which will be played in Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Trivandrum and Chennai. In the League stage, every team will play one match against every other team in their group. There are six groups, including five Elite ones of six teams each and one plate group consisting of eight teams.
The Knockout stage will have seven matches, four quarterfinals, two semifinals and the final. The knockout matches will start from 28 February 2022 and the final will be played from 16 - 20 March 2022.
The BCCI has agreed to use a limited DRS system for this edition of the tournament in the knockout stage. The limited DRS system will not use Hawk-Eye and UltraEdge
