UFC 294: Makhachev vs. Volkanovski 2 was an MMA event organized and produced by the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The event took place at the Etihad Arena, Abu Dhabi, UAE, on October 21, 2023. The main card for the night started at 2 pm ET, and the preliminary card was at 10 am ET. Makhachev successfully defended the UFC lightweight title against Volkanovski in the main event.

The main event for the night was a lightweight title bout between the current champion, Islam Makhachev, and the featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski. Makhahchev won the bout via knockout at 3:06 in the first round. Earlier, Makhachev was supposed to face the former champion Charles Oliveira in their rematch after UFC 280. Due to injury, Oliveira had to withdraw ten days prior to the fight. However, Volkanovski, who already had an eye on the lightweight title, agreed to fight the champion for the gold on such short notice. The contenders met earlier for the same lightweight championship at UFC 284, where the featherweight champion moved up a weight class to try his shot at becoming the double champion.
The former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman faced the No.4 ranked welterweight contender Khamzat Chimaev in a middleweight bout for the co-main event for the night. Chimaev won the fight via a majority decision after the three-rounder. Khamzat Chimaev was supposed to face Paulo Costa for the co-main event earlier. However, Costa withdrew from the fight due to a surgery he had and was replaced by ‘The Nigerian Nightmare.’ The winner of this bout will get a shot at the UFC middleweight title, which is currently reigned by Sean Strickland.
The main card also had other exciting match-ups, like a light heavyweight bout between the No.2 ranked Magomed Ankalaev and the No.7 ranked Johnny Walker. Ankalaev is coming off a split draw in his last fight against Jan Blachowicz for the UFC light heavyweight title. Whereas Walker is coming off a unanimous decision win over Anthony Smith in his last fight and is already on a three-fight win streak.
A middleweight bout between Ikram Aliskerov and Warlley Alves was also added to the main card. Earlier, Aliskerov, who is on a six-fight win streak, was supposed to face Nassourdine Imavov. Imavov had to withdraw from the bout due to visa issues, and Alves came in.
As a main card opener, Said Nurmagomedov submitted Muin Gafurov at 1:13 in the first round of a bantamweight bout. Nurmagomedov is coming off a decision loss against Jonathan Martinez in his last fight, whereas Gafurov made his UFC debut in his last outing and lost the bout via decision to John Castaneda.
