New York Jets in play for Sammy Watkins?

Sammy Watkins told me Rex said to him recently that Watkins is so hot “the Jets are trying to trade 10 years of [first-round] picks for me.” — Bart Hubbuch (@HubbuchNYP)

SammyWatkinsRex is known for his hyperbole, but Watkins is one of the better wide receivers we’ve seen in the last decade. That’s not hyperbole. He’s got the speed, good size, and an affinity for the end zone.

The Jets did not meet with Watkins anytime prior to Thursday’s event, but Rex’s son is a walk-on wide receiver at Clemson University, and the school was nationally telecasted like all the time. I’m sure the Jets’ front office, like 31 other teams’, realizes what a good player Watkins can be in the NFL.

It sounds like a pipe dream—especially given the load of picks that may be required to trade-up to 2-5 (around where Watkins is projected)—but if you think it puts your team over the preverbal ‘hump’, you may pull the trigger.

Without getting anyone too excited, imagine this…

Watkins, Decker, Kerley, Cumberland, Ivory, Johnson, (Another WR/TE?), etc.

That, coupled with a Top-10 or perhaps better defense, and you’d think the playoffs would be very easy to picture.

- Jake Steinberg of TheJetsBlog.com recently mentioned a unique tidbit on Watkin’s teammate, QB Tajh Boyd.

- NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport says that the Jets (and 49ers) are in-play for a possible trade-up for wide receiver.
