The Atlanta Falcons are currently part of the NFC South division of the NFL. Established in 1965 as an expansion team, the Falcons were originally supposed to be a part of the American Football League (pre NFL-AFL merger). However, the franchise joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1966. When the Falcons franchise bid was made in 1965, it became the costliest franchise in the NFL at that time ($8.5 million). The Falcons did not find too much success in their first three seasons, with a record of 11 losses in each of the seasons. The team picked up their record in the late 1960s and the 1970s with the help of legendary linebacker Tommy Nobis and defensive end Claude Humphrey. The Falcons are currently valued at around $4 billion as per Forbes.
