Growing up Moreno was an avid boxing fan as he was not aware of any other combat sports. He developed an interest in capoeira but couldn’t find a school to train in Tijuana. While searching, he discovered an MMA gym and began training in kickboxing and jiu-jitsu instead.

Moreno made his professional MMA debut in Mexico in April 2011, building a record of 6-3 over two years. In 2014, he joined the World Fighting Federation (WFF), where he went 5-0, ultimately claiming the WFF Flyweight Championship. His success earned him a spot in The Ultimate Fighter season 25 flyweight tournament, launching his UFC career.
