Richard Petty took over Petty Enterprises and continued being its operating owner until his son took over the business. Petty Enterprises was later on brought by Gillett-Evernham Motorsports but Evernham later on left the team.


The team was renamed to Richard Petty Motorsports and Petty took over operations of the team. He later took full control of Richard Petty Motorsports with his investors, Medallion Financial Group in 2010.
