3 NFL QBs in league history to record multiple 5,000 yard seasons feat. Patrick Mahomes

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes

Dan Marino was the first quarterback in NFL history to record 5,000 passing yards in a single season. He did so during the 1984 season with the Miami Dolphins. The epic milestone wasn't reached again by any player until the 2008 season. It has now been done 15 total times in NFL history, with 14 of them coming in the last 15 years.

As the modern style of offense heavily features the passing game, new milestones are being created for quarterbacks. Peyton Manning, Justin Herbert, Matthew Stafford, Jameis Winston, and Ben Roethlisberger have all joined Marino in the 5,000 yard club. Only three players have ever done it more than once, including these three quarterbacks who are in their own elite group.

Patrick Mahomes is the most recent quarterback to record multiple 5,000-yard passing seasons. He did so during the 2018 season, his first as a starter for the Kansas City Chiefs, when he was also named NFL MVP. In just his fifth season as a starting quarterback, he hit the milestone again during the 2022 season.

Mahomes is continuing an incredible start to his career. At just 27 years old, he has already won an MVP award, Super Bowl ring, Super Bowl MVP, and two AFC championships. He is looking to add to that trophy case as the Chiefs make a postseason run in 2022, while he's also the heavy favorite to be named MVP again.

#2 - Tom Brady

Tom Brady is one of only three quarterbacks to accomplish 5,000 yards in a season multiple times, but he's the only one to do it with two different teams. He first did so in 2011 with the New England Patriots. He did it again a decade later in 2021 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brady's name is seemingly on just about every possible list of quarterback accomplishments in NFL history.

#1 - Drew Brees

Drew Brees is in a league of his own in this category. He is the only quarterback in NFL history with more than two 5,000 yard seasons. He did so an incredible five times. He did so during the 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2016 seasons. This also means his streak of three consecutive seasons doing so is more than any other player has done it a total of times. Perhaps even more unbelievable is the fact that he never won an NFL MVP award, despite his greatness.
