On Tuesday, it was announced that quarterback Brian Hoyer has agreed to a two-year contract with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Jimmy Garoppolo was acquired by the Raiders in a three-year, $72.75 million deal last month. Additionally, the team possesses the seventh overall selection in this month's draft.

Hoyer joins the Raiders as another ex-Patriot. Former Patriots on the team include Jimmy Garoppolo, Jakobi Meyers, Isaiah Zuber, Jakob Johnson, Adam Butler, Brandon Bolden, Chandler Jones and Justin Herron.

While Josh McDaniels served as the New England Patriots' offensive coordinator, Hoyer and McDaniels worked alongside each other from 2017 to 2018 and again from 2020 to 2021.

Hoyer's deal with New England had a single year left on it, and it contained $1.4 million in guaranteed compensation for 2023, but the exact terms in his Raiders contract are still unclear.

Brian Hoyer will bring more experience to the Raiders’ team

Brian Hoyer began his NFL career as an undrafted free agent in 2009. The 37-year-old has played as a second-string QB for the Patriots for most of his career, but he has also played for the Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears, Houston Texans, Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers.

Throughout his lengthy career, Hoyer has played in 76 matches with 40 as a starter, amassing a 16-24 record in those 40 games. Last season, he only had one start for the Patriots, and before leaving the game due to injury, he hit the target with five of his six throws for 37 yards. For the remainder of the season, he stayed on injured reserve.

Brian Hoyer made the most starts of his career in 2013 and 2014, starting 16 games in two years with the Cleveland Browns. He had a 10-6 record, an average of 231.8 yards per game, 17 TD passes, 16 INTs and a quarterback rating of 77.6 during that period.

Hoyer can be counted on to fill in and perform when necessary, but he's not expected to be a viable starter at this point in his career.

Given Garoppolo's past injuries, adding an experienced backup behind him makes sense.

Hoyer should mainly offer McDaniels' scheme expertise and be a seasoned figure to support Garoppolo — and perhaps also a rookie quarterback. There have been rumors that the Raiders may use their No. 7 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft to pick a young quarterback for the future.
