Bryce Young was not supposed to be in this position. When he was drafted first overall by the Carolina Panthers, he was supposed to be their savior, their first true franchise face since Cam Newton.
His debut was a rough learning curve, as the Panthers finished a league-worst 2-15 and fired head coach Frank Reich midseason. 2024 was supposed to be a clean slate, a fresh start, with a new head coach/general manager tandem of Dave Canales and Dan Morgan at the helm.
Instead, the same old struggles started occurring again. And this time, they had dire consequences: just two weeks in, Young was benched for Andy Dalton. He did return in Week 8 after Dalton sprained his thumb in a car accident, but otherwise, the notion is clear: the experiment has failed, and it may be time to move on.
Thus, these five teams are the biggest candidates to target the former Heisman winner...
Indianapolis Colts, and 4 other teams that should make aggressive offers for Bryce Young
5) Indianapolis Colts
Three picks after Bryce Young, another quarterback came off the board in Anthony Richardson. The Indianapolis Colts were hoping that he would become their new franchise face, but that plan fell apart early on.
He injured his shoulder five games into his rookie season, allowing Gardner Minshew (more on him later) to shockingly almost lead the team to the playoffs and make a Pro Bowl. And now as a sophomore, he has been benched for Joe Flacco after temporarily pulling himself out of the 20-23 loss at the Houston Texans.
That is not good. Hence, a bold scenario of Young and Richardson being traded for each other, then made to sit and learn behind veterans before becoming fully "pro-ready" is possible.
4) Los Angeles Rams
Matthew Stafford theoretically still has two years left on his contract, but he wants another long-term extension. At 36, though, he is closer to retirement than that.
The Los Angeles Rams are currently mediocre at best, and they may be looking to rebuild for the future. Stetson Bennett was thought to be the future, but he has obviously not played much.
So why not a trade for Young? In Inglewood, he will get to throw passes to another batchmate in Puka Nacua, as well as Tutu Atwell and Super Bowl LVI MVP Cooper Kupp.
3) Cleveland Browns
If the Cleveland Browns had not realized it before, they are now realizing how poor of a decision trading for Deshaun Watson was.
The former Houston Texan has barely seen the field, initially because of a suspension for off-field misconduct, then because of multiple season-ending injuries. And when he did play, he was poor.
In 2024 alone, the Browns went 1-6 with him under center before he tore his Achilles and was forced to undergo season-ending surgery again. That may be "the last straw", they say; and he will definitely be released in the offseason.
In the meantime, put Bryce Young in, have him study the team's flaws, and learn from there.
2) New York Giants
The New York Giants are still feeling "buyers' remorse" over extending Danial Jones instead of Saquon Barkley in the 2023 offseason. Ever since that four-year $160-million extension was signed, they completely collapsed from a shocking playoff run in 2022 and are set to continue collapsing even further in 2024.
Analysts predict that they will aim for one of Carson Beck and Shedeur Sanders, but a more prudent move will be to trade for a young quarterback like Bryce Young, and then use their guaranteed first-round pick elsewhere, like the secondary.
1) Las Vegas Raiders
And finally, we come to Gardner Minshhew's current team.
He has completely flopped in Nevada, being benched for Aidan O'Connell after five games. Then when he returned in place of the injured sophomore, he lost the ball four times.
That warrants a culling, and Tom Telesco should listen to the clamor for a change. Young is standing out there, waiting for his nightmare in Charlotte to end. And he should be brought in for a change, unless either Carson Beck or Shedeur Sanders is more appealing.
