Christian McCaffrey came into the game against the Packers in Week 12 of the 2024 NFL season knowing that he was critical to the 49ers' hopes of coming out of their visit to Wisconsin with a win. Both these teams made the playoffs last year but they are in a battle with other contenders in the NFC to make it to the postseason in 2024.
San Francisco came into this match with a 5-5 record and bottom of the NFC West. They needed a victory to expand their chances of playing beyond the regular season. A defeat would have been damaging to their hopes because they would have ended this week with a losing record with the 9-2 Bills coming up next.
The Packers needed a win too because they play in an NFC North division where two teams are playing at a very high level. The Lions and Vikings both won in Week 12 and now have a 10-1 and 9-2 record respectively. A win would put them a game behind Minnesota at 8-3, whereas a defeat would have left them two behind with Green Bay having lost this season against both the franchises ahead of them.
With so much on the line, Christian McCaffrey knew he would have to be at his best to peg back their NFC rivals. With starting quarterback Brock Purdy also out, Brandon Allen was starting and needed the running back to help ease him into a high-pressure matchup. This is how the 49ers star fared today.

The first half was all Green Bay as the home team went into halftime with a 17-7 lead. It could have been much more too as San Francisco struggled to get a grip on the game. A George Kittle touchdown gave the scoreboard a sheen that the visiting team scarcely deserved.
Much of that was due to the 49ers' inability to get anything going in their rushing game. Christian McCaffrey was the only one who got touches in the offensive backfield in the first two quarters and picked up just four yards on three attempts. He was doing better as a receiver with 14 yards from two catches.
The second half was a bit better and it came because Jordan Mason was brought in to relieve some of the workload on the starting running back. However, it was a fleeting moment as the backup rusher got a single attempt and picked up 16 yards. He did not get any other touches going into the fourth quarter even though Christian McCaffrey's longest was 9 yards at that point.
Christian McCaffrey was not the only culprit. A good throw by Brandon Allen went through Deebo Samuel's hands to hand Xavier McKinney an interception before the backup quarterback was strip-sacked in the fourth quarter. Both those turnovers led to touchdowns for the Packers.
With Trent Williams also inactive for the 49ers and the offensive line having to adjust to the new cadence behind them, they could not open up enough lanes for Christian McCaffrey. That led to Kyle Shanahan looking for different ways to get his star runner involved in the game.
For example, with the score 31-10 in the fourth quarter, the play called for Brandon Allen to throw a short screen pass to Christian McCaffrey. It looked like the running back would pick up his biggest gain on that reception only for him to fumble the ball and give the Packers yet another turnover.
With Green Bay taking full advantage of that and scoring yet another touchdown to make the score 38-10, the game was over at that point if it was not before.
