“Lot of impulsivity, sudden changes in behavior” – CTE expert raises questions on Aaron Hernandez’s death after new finding

Super Bowl XLVI - Media Day
Former Patriots TE Aaron Hernandez

Aaron Hernandez had a change in his behavior after playing in the league and taking many hits. One possible reason for Hernandez's change in behavior was that he had a brain disease called chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE. It's been connected to head injuries and sports like football. CTE can cause individuals to be aggressive or even hostile.

Researchers have observed several cases where people with CTE died by suicide. Dr. Ann McKee, who leads Boston University's CTE Center, spoke on the matter and what CTE is at its core when it came to Hernandez.

Dr. McKee said:

"There's just a lot of impulsivity and very sudden changes in behavior."

The former New England Patriots star's life took a drastic turn with no real answers as to the sudden shift in his behavior. In 2013, Odin Lloyd's body was discovered about a mile from Hernandez's home in Massachusetts. Lloyd was involved with Hernandez's girlfriend's sister at the time.

Days later, Aaron Hernandez was arrested on a murder charge in Lloyd's death and taken from his home in handcuffs. He later pleaded not guilty to the charge. New England cut the tight end just hours after his arrest.

The former University of Florida standout was also indicted on first-degree murder charges for the deaths of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado. His trial for Lloyd's murder started in January 2015. Hernandez was found guilty of first-degree murder on April 15, 2015.

Hernandez went on trial for the 2012 murders of de Abreu and Furtado in February 2017. In April 2017, he was acquitted of those charges. Sadly, Aaron Hernandez took his life in his prison cell on April 17, 2017. The tight end was just 27 years old at the time of his death.

Hernandez's violent behavior started in college

While with the Gators, Hernandez was investigated by the police and supposedly didn't deny punching a waiter at a restaurant near the University of Florida campus. Gators quarterback Tim Tebow witnessed the incident.

A shooting in Gainesville left two men injured in September 2017. Aaron Hernandez and three Gators teammates were questioned by authorities after the shooting.

What happened to Aaron Hernandez's fiancée? What was she accused of?

Shayanna Jenkins-Hernandez, the late Patriots tight end's fiancée, was accused of mishandling her daughter Avielle's trust fund. Jenkins-Hernandez spent $17K on clothing, $10K on entertainment and thousands on self-care, such as gym fees and hair and nails salons, per court documents.

David Schwartz, the attorney over the trust, began objecting to Jenkins-Hernandez’s reimbursement statements last September after she sought $10K from the trust to pay for Avielle’s competitive dance lessons.

Per Schwartz, the yearly $150K given to Jenkins-Hernandez to cover Avielle’s everyday expenses is sufficient enough to cover the dance classes.
