Calvin Ridley announced last year that he would be veering away from the Atlanta Falcons and the NFL to concentrate on his mental well-being. He did not, however, announce his retirement from the team or the league. The Falcons supported the idea. On October 31, 2021, Ridley posted a message on his Twitter and Instagram accounts outlining his decision to withdraw from the league:

"As much as I'd like to be on the field competing with my teammates, the past few weeks have been incredibly difficult. Now I need to move away from football and focus on my mental welfare. I want to thank my teammates, the Atlanta Falcons organization, our amazing fans, my friends, and my family for all of their support. This will help me be the best version of myself now and in the future."

Although it's unknown precisely what Calvin Ridley was dealing with, head coach Arthur Smith remained silent on the issue:

"Players can speak, Calvin released a statement. I'll let Calvin speak for Calvin, just like anyone on this team. If they want to talk about a knee issue, that's their right; it won't come from me."

Calvin Ridley is currently suspended for gambling

After discovering that Calvin Ridley had been betting on Falcons games while on leave, he was suspended for the 2022 campaign. Ridley is still playing and is set to return to the NFL next season.

An NFL inquiry found no proof that Ridley had exploited insider knowledge. It also found no proof that any of the Falcons' teammates, trainers, or personnel knew about the gambling. Ridley did acknowledge placing a $1,500 wager, but he asserted on Twitter that he wasn't even watching the games.

Calvin Ridley has been traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars

With his trade to the Jacksonville Jaguars, Ridley's turbulent stint with the Falcons was brought to an abrupt conclusion. The Jaguars obtained Ridley just one hour before the trade deadline. Atlanta will receive a fifth-round selection in 2023 and a conditional fourth-round pick in 2024.

Jacksonville are committing to the long-term in trading for Ridley, even though the decision may seem a risk to some.
