The Houston Texans have appointed DeMeco Ryans as their new head coach, the franchise confirmed on Tuesday. The 38-year-old will serve as the sixth head coach for the Texans since they joined the NFL in 2002.

As Ryans will take charge of the Texans for the 2023 season, we take a look at all the head coaches that have been part of the franchise since their inception.

Dom Capers was appointed as the first coach of the Texans in 2002. He led the team to an underwhelming 18-46 record over four seasons before being replaced by Gary Kubiak.

Kubiak took over the reins in 2006 and helped the Texans to back-to-back divisional championships in 2011 and 2012. He parted ways with the team towards the end of the 2013 season after compiling a 61-64 record while winning two divisional titles along the way.

In 2014, Bill O'Brien was appointed as the Texans' new head coach. He led the team to four divisional championships and was thought to be the man to lead the team to Super Bowl glory.

However, O'Brien was fired just four games into the 2020 season after the Texans were 0-4. Nonetheless, he remains the only Texans coach with an overall winning record (52-48).

In 2021, the Houston-based outfit appointed David Culley, but he lasted just one season after a poor 4-13 finish.

The following year, Lovie Smith was promoted to head coach of the Houston Texans. However, he too failed to get the best out of the team as they finished with a 3-13-1 record.

After a dismal debut season as head coach, Smith was sacked. The Texans then confirmed DeMeco Ryans as their new coach heading into the 2023 season.

The Houston Texans had one of their worst campaigns in the NFL this season. They finished fourth in the AFC South with a 3-13-1 record under head coach Lovie Smith.

Smith's sacking was confirmed only a few hours after the Texans beat the Indianapolis Colts in Week 18. Their two other wins came against their other divisional rivals, the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans.

With Ryans entering the frame, Houston can look forward to the 2023 season. The head coach spent six seasons with the team and has a fair idea of how the franchise operates.

Transforming the Texans into a success story, however, will be a whole new ball game. The team hasn't made it to the playoffs since 2020 and getting Houston into the postseason will be a tall task.
